I am considering taking Amtrak to Champaign and cycling to an event at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club. Does anyone know whether Neil Street and Kirby Avenue are safe for cycling in the dark (with appropriate lights)? I am a regular commuter in Chicago, so I don't get too freaked having automobiles and trucks around. But if motor vehicles are filling the road curb to curb, and the drivers have never seen a bicycle before, that is a different story.
If Neil and Kirby are not approriate, are there alternatives?

Personally I would pop down to Clark (or Logan, whatever its called there, but the little road south of the station) and take that west to State, State south to John, John west to Duncan, Duncan south to Kirby.
Neil isnt that bad (little fast sometimes), nor is Kirby, but State being a one-way feels a little better, John is extra-wide and open, then Duncan is where a lot of group rides go and has big shoulders.
Great. Just the kind of insight I was hoping for.
