Mountain Biking - New bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im sure you've heard It lots, but I'm brand new to the forum, and I'm gettin a brand new (to me) bike. Actually I stumbled across the site looking for information on my new Giant. Its a hardtail, w/ front disc, and hmmm, thats all I can pretty much say right now, he got it about 2 months ago. I'll find more out about it, and hopefully post a picture, if you can do it on this BBS.
EDIT*** Sorry, forgot to mention I rode a Pugeot Dune Racing previous to this.

Kevin, let me be the 1st to say Welcome!
Giant makes a great bike for the money. Probably the best deal out there currently. You could probably score an even better deal at the present time on a closeout since the new 2002s are coming out!. Personally I like Specialized and Haro's, but that's a whole different thread.
Enjoy the forums, I know I do (Kudos, Joe!)

Welcome Kevin...
Like A2P mentioned, Giant makes great bikes for the money. I think you are going to be very happy with the disk brake set up.
Enjoy the new bike and show us some pics.

Thanx guys, I learned some more about the bike today. The disc is a mechanical, rather than hydraulic. and I can honestly say I'm glad, because hydraulic stuff is too in depth for me right now. The bike is an atx 840.
I also like specialized bikes, my friend has one right now, something like 9 inches rear travel, 5 front, disc brake setup worth 3 times a much as I'm paying for this giant, etc etc...
How would I best prep a Mongoose Villian BMX to sell it, its two seasons old? I repacked the bearings lots, and kept it in good mechanical shape, but how do I make it appealing to some beginner BMXer? How can I make the silver colour really shine well? Approx how much cnd funds should I be asking for it, as well?
Hey Kev im as new as you here!
I think your bike is great, ive used one and loved it.
I want one just like yours but cant get an atx 840, does anyone have any suggestions on a simliar bike????
thx

Hey, welcome to the forum guys. I've been on this forum for a month now and love it.
I was in the same boat as you guys, lots of choices, and found the bikes expensive.
The cheapest and best deals can be found at end of year sellouts like right now until the snow starts falling. If you are looking for a starter bike that is under $500 CDN, look at the Oryx HTA 250 or Rocky Mountain bikes found in stores throughout Canada. Also by mail order is the Iron Horse bikes-not too expensive. If you've got the cash Giant, Gary Fisher, and Specialized are nice bikes too. I got my year 2000 Gary Fisher X-caliber with aluminum frame, hard tail, Marzocchi Z.2 shock, LX/XTR, Hayes disc brakes, race disc rims, light bike for $1300 American reduced from $2000 due to end of year closeout and it is a discontinued bike model-(closest model now called G.F. Mt.Tam-with XT/XTR) plus the store usually gives a 15% discount on their overpriced accessories.
Shop the net and as many stores as you can. Test ride until you are sure you are getting the right bike, because you may end up riding it for years to come and not selling it.

Thx, for the info
