Mountain Biking - Jeep mountain bikes???????

Does anyone know anything about Jeep mountain bikes? Are the parts on them good quality? Are they worth the money? Check them out.

Do a search, there have been numerous threads on this subject, all in all, the consensus is that there are much better bikes for the same money and you pay a lot for the name!

What's your budget for a bike?

What type of riding do you do?

What is your skill level?

With that info, we can give you other suggestions for better bikes.

I'm a beginner rider and my budget is $400-$500. I don't plan on doing any extreme riding, mainly transportation on campus and weekend trail riding. I've also been looking at Raleigh and Specialized. Any suggestions on what to get?

For the billionth time, for ~$500 get a Specialized Hardrock, you cant beat it for the money. This question comes up every day on here, try searching.

Can we just get a sticky that says "If you want a bike for ~$500 buy a Hardrock" so we dont have to constantly read threads about it.

A full suspension at that price is bound to be trouble. While I don't think Jeep is total crap a dually in that range can't be good.

I'll be the first to tell you I don't know much about off-road bikes, having owned only one, that got boosted years ago, but this is one pretty bike:

I'm a big fan of Specialized bikes, so I would steer you toward those. I never really liked Raliegh bikes. No real reason.

Other bikes to consider: Trek, Gary Fisher, Haro, KHS, Iron Horse, Diamond Back, Giant, Kona, ....etc. The list goes on and on.

You can get a quality hardtail for your budget. I would stick with a hardtail for you for a couple of reasons. The first is that a good "quality" full suspension isn't available for anything under $1,000.00. Secondly, a hardtail(HT) will have better components for the same $$ as a full suspension (FS). A HT will be lighter. A HT will require less maintenance. A HT will allow you to hone your skills as a beginner and you'll be a better rider because of it!

Good Luck, test ride as many different bikes as you can. Buy the one that you feel most comfortable one regardless of what fork/components are on it versus another "good Deal" that doesn't feel as comfy!

I'd stick to buying from a LBS (local Bike Shop) versus online for a beginner. The LBS will help you with fit (frames come in different sizes) and any repairs/maintenance you might need. Also, most shops include a free 30 day tune-up that is necessary for ANY bike. Cables stretch and the bike "breaks-in", and it needs to be tuned up after about a month of riding.

Plus, I highly recommend a helmet. Save my life numerous times. I wear one EVERY time I go riding.

I got my Trek 4900 Alpha for just over $500. The bike feels very solid and fast, corners well, and the components are decent for the money.

Oh....Look! it has a stnad! It will be a perfect part for removing and putting it on to my Huffy!:crash:

WOW someone needs a nap! Dude, settle down... We all have seen the same threads about this topic. But there are alot of newbies and they might not be familiar with the search function or how forums work.

I do like the idea of a sticky with the bikes for $500 ..... maybe we could get something on here like that. Or even a seperate area for begginers looking for new rides...just some thoughts...

Note - Yes, I know BJ was the name given to the Toyota manufactured Jeeps.

For around US$500 you could buy a Specilized Uno.

But I wouldn't buy an Uno. Too heavy, stick to a HT for your budget.

I'm pretty new here so I havent quite got to the level of frustration you have yet, however I will admit, the "under $500" question does come up pretty regularly.

If someone wants to help me write a beginners guide to selecting a bike for under $500 I'd be willing to host it on my site so that we can simply refer people to it when the question arises.

Dont buy a jeep bike, i know its mean but you will be laughed at alot, a whole lot. Knowbody will take you serious. Buy a specialized or something a little used.
