Mountain Biking - OMG! I bought a Specialized Stumpjumper (pics)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hell yeah!

Yeah yeah, dork disc removal is my number one priority (after buying mountain shoes). I'm a roadie, but couldn't pass this one up. It's as light as I'd feel comfortable riding on the trails around here, and the price was right. 2007 model for $1150 out the door, cash.
Can't wait to ride this. Don't care about V-Brakes. :)

Definitly a nice looking bike but I am a re-born newb, whats a dork disk?

Ha! Sure. I checked out some Santa Cruz hardtails, and they were all about double the price for similar specs (though they all had hydro disc breaks). With Santa Cruz Chameleon, you pay $1100 for the FRAME ALONE. I paid that much for this bike. And Specialized's lifetime warranty beats Santa Cruz 2 years. If someone gave me one of those bikes, I'd love to ride it, but they suck as far as value.
nice bike! you can remove the reflectors too, wont need those offroad ;)This is going to replace my road bike as my ride around town, so I'll probably keep the reflectors for now.
Definitly a nice looking bike but I am a re-born newb, whats a dork disk? You can hardly see it on that picture, but there's a plastic disc between the casette and the wheel spokes that prevents the chain from destroying the wheel in case of a possible overthrow... but they're pretty much useless if the bike is properly adjusted.

Haha, I didn't know that was what people called it. Nice purchase, have fun riding it!

nice bike i like it
Nothing wrong with V brakes...put it this way they're lighter than disks. Just throw on some Kool-Stop pads and you're good to go. Sweet bike BTW.

nice looking rig...
too bad i don't know how to ride it. today i took a really nasty spill on the thing (hit a jump with my weight forward = ouch) i landed on my head and shoulder. the helmet is broken. my shoulder is probably broken, (i have to get it xrayed tomorrow), but thank god the bike is okay. that was my first concern when i snapped out of my daze.
the rear wheel went out of true earlier as well, but that's easily correctable. overall, the stumpjumper handles just amazingly. this is the first mountain bike with a truly adjustable lockout, which makes climbing almost as much fun as descending. the bike corners very well, although it could be better with different tires.
does anyone have any suggestions for decent trail tires? i haven't had a mountain bike for years so i'm a bit out of it.
hopefully i'm not off the bike for too long.
glad you found a good buy. who cares about the brakes. it would be better if they weren't even there. this way you won't ever be blamed for "skidding through corners" --as discussed in the other 3 page thread.

Dang dude, how long have you had the bike?! Hope you heal up well, take it easy and slow on the bike until you get your bearings back!

Ouch! I can identify with this. I've spent the last 10 years falling on water. It's been 10 years since I was BMXing. I'm now a roadie and bought my first Mountain Bike a month ago. Needless to say, I've crashed all over the place.
I had one crash where I slipped going uphill while trying to clip in. I hit a rock and went sideways and rammed the chain-ring into my calf. Lots of blood. Another spill involved crossing a stream over a tiny wooden bridge - I fell in the water, after hitting the bridge. My last crash saw me rolling over the handlebars and into my left elbow, all while clipped in. Logically my bike landed on me.
The bike still looks like new, with only a ghastly scratch on the top tube by one of the offending rocks. Haha, yesterday I stopped by the LBS and picked up some knee/shin guards and elbow pads. Due to the roadie background, it's hard to accept I'm going to be carrying extra weight. But who cares!

Great looking bike. Do you know what the exact weight of the bike is?

Sorry about the spill man. That stinks to crash on your first ride on it. That is a really nice bike though. It looks cool as well. My last crash occured when I stabbed my chaing ring into a bridge and the bike was standing verticle when I bailed. I would of taken a chunk of wood out if I didnt unclip in time.
Great looking bike. Do you know what the exact weight of the bike is?
no, but i think it's around 25.5 pounds.
it feels a couple of pounds lighter than my friends bike which is 27.3, and several pounds heavier than my 18 pound road bike...
for a stock xc bike, that's not so bad! when i get more money, i may swap parts out for something lighter.
my upgrade schedule looks like this:
1) QR for the seatpost
2) New saddle
3) Hydro disc brakes
4) Easton EC70 handlebars
about my shoulder! it's not broken. I have partially severed my AC ligament. It connects the clavicle to somethingorother. I really don't know, other than that it's not super serious, and I'll probably be back on the bike in 10 to 14 days :D
Plenty of time to get the wheel trued and a new saddle :)

I agree! I have never had a problem with v-brakes, even with stock replacement pads! Unless you want to spend the money, use the v-brakes.
That bike will last for ever! I am STILL riding my '96 M2Comp. & still love it.
What saddle came on your bike that you want to replace it? I bought the S.B.G. Avatar gel this spring & love it.
Congrats on the bike, & heal quick!
Chris
What saddle came on your bike that you want to replace it? I bought the S.B.G. Avatar gel this spring & love it.Pretty much all the non-moving parts on the bike are specialized. Specialized bar, stem, seatpost, tires, saddle. The saddle is way too big and cushy for me. I don't want something as hard as a road saddle, but definitely a little less cushy would be nice for my lycra-clad ass. I don't mind Specialized's saddles for the most part (have an Alias 143 on my road bike), but this one seems pretty bottom of the barrel.

Try this saddle: The photos don't show it because it's apparently a prototype, but the production model has kevlar side panels on the rear wings:
