anyone seen this before? any idea what it might mean? i'm thinking army bike part, and when i take it out of the frame i'm betting on the end being threaded so it could perhaps be used as a silencer?

Hey! Thanks for that mate :) i'm kind of happy that it seems such an odity that there havent been any guesses so far... or it could be that only a couple of people found there way to the pic. thanks a million!

I have no guess as to the stamping on the seatpost, but if you just want more info on the Carlton, check this site:

if you have other serial numbers on the frame or fork steerer, he may be able to date it for you.
BTW, the crank is a Williams (E. Williams, Birmingham).
