Greetings, SoCal'ers!
My wife and I will be visiting Paso Robles with some friends this weekend. They'll be drinking wine, I'm bringing my bike and I'm hoping you might be able to recommend some nice routes in the area. I'm particularly interested in finding some long, steady climbs (I'm doing Mt. Diablo in a couple weeks), light traffic if possible.
Thanks!

Try the Cuesta Grade area at the north edge of San Luis Obispo (maybe 45 minutes south of Paso).
Sorry I can't be much more helo, but I gotta run to class--I'll repost later.

Thanks. I'll google it.
I will be in Paso this weekend too. I plan on riding Sunday from Highway 101 to Cambria over 46 West. Probably extend this a little by going up North on Highway 1. If you can make it love to have you along other wise I am going solo.
Here is a link to good rides. (http://www.slobc.org/favorite.html)
Thanks for the links Mark. Saturday is a definite riding day; Sunday not so sure.
go to the SLOBC (San Luis Obispo Bike Club) website. They had lots of great rides posted on their website. Anything involved in the Wildflower Century will suit your needs. If you don't mind driving out to Creston, it's a great place to start your ride. I also like the Lake Naciemento to Templeton Loop. Hopefully that's posted on the SLOBC site (slobc.org) as well or you can find it on google maps. Pretty much any riding in the area is hilly, but beautiful.
About the best ride with extended climbs, without driving somewhere, would be to go west on Hwy 46 to Old Creek/Santa Rosa Rd. turn left and go down Old Creek to Hwy 1. Then go north on Hwy 1 to Hwy 46 turn right and back up Hwy 46 to Paso. Hwy 46 is about a 7 mile climb and 5%.
You can also go out of Paso on Peachy Canyon Rd. (between 6th and 7th off of Olive, it's called Pacific Ave. at Olive) to Vineyard turn left to Jack Creek, right to Hwy 46. Turn right on Hwy 46 to York Mt. Rd. turn right and climb York Mt. And it will end up back on Hwy 46, turn right and head to Old Creek Rd. as mentioned above.

Lighthouse Century is this weekend, and it'll be going up in that area (starting in San Luis Obispo, up to San Simeon, then back). You might see a bunch of us there this weekend.
'Sorry to dredge an old thread, but has anyone ridden Cuesta Grade (but NOT on Hwy 101)? There's this old road, probably a RR right of way from long ago, that you can see from 101 that always looks inviting in a death ride sort of way, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get on it. Has anyone on the Central Coast ridden it and can give some pointers on how to access? Thanks in advance.

Sorry again to dredge up an old thread. I did a search on my home town of Paso and came up with this. If you did not figure it out t4mv, you can access that road from the top of the grade on the right side going south or at the very bottom on the right side going south. I have ridden it several times and it is a great ride. If you start on the bottom and go up you can take a "left" at the top and access some wonderful riding. Then make a huge loop and end up back at your car. Then hit Frank's hotdogs for an after ride celebration.

Ahhh...this was on the route of my first century. Great Western Bike Rally, Early 80's, when I was a wee lad. My first big climb. Brings back memories.
