Hi, this is my first post on this forum -- hopefully I'm not breaking any rules. I'm looking to replace my old (1989) mountain bike and a cyclocross seems like the right type of bike for me. I want to be able to do some roadwork as well as take the light trails around here (suburban chicago). I have been looking to spend significantly less, but a couple of the local bike stores slash crack dealers have had me ride the Specialized Expert, since it was available in a size that would work for me (54 and 56). I love the bike! But list on an '07 is $2200, which is way more than I am looking to spend. I'd be real happy with a used one in good shape, or a new leftover if it was priced very aggressively. But I haven't really seen any yet. I've been scanning the local craigslist, where I sold my old bike (yeah!), but it's tough to find something so specific in a used bike. I've also looked at ebay, w/o a lot of luck in my first week of lusting.

So, anyone have any good ideas of where to look, or what would constitute a smoking buy if I saw it? Either new or gently used would be fine. Thanks!

You were close already. Craigslist. Just widen your scope. Put "specialized tricross expert" craigslist in Google with the quotes and you'll see all sorts of bikes that people are usually willing to ship. I bought mine and a few other bikes that way.

Thanks, good advice! I guess last night, after getting psyched about the idea of finding one of these, my individual search of major cities on CL was a bit inefficient. LOL

Still not a lot of choices nationwide. Must be a popular bike. At least until I am ready to sell one....
