So there we are riding along at a modest tempo, when all the sudden we come upon a downed wire stretched across the street right at decapitation level. Shhit. The rider in front of me spots it at the last second. We brake hard. He sways to the left. I kiss his back wheel and down I go. Hard!

Called the wife, went to the ER. Fractured wrist and elbow. Ouch! Down for six weeks. The bike seems fine, a little banged up, but my brand new Assos (their maiden voyage) are pretty scuffed. Damn fine shorts though.;) So it looks like you can take me off the Lighthouse dinner list. However, on the plus side, I just read that Ernesto Colnago will be doing custom fittings at Helen's in Santa Monica on Saturday, so if I play my cards right I may be able to ''poor me" myself into a new frame.:D Although my wife pretty much sees through that kinda crap by now.

Anyway, ride safe everyone.

:( Yuck! Please tell me that the wire was not put there on purpose. I'm so sorry to hear. Get better and we will miss you at Lighthouse.

Where is the wire? Did someone move it after your accident?

Hope that you feel better (and get a new bike) soon!!!

Wow, Sean, sorry to hear about that. Glad you're (basically) alright. Alan had a crash too last week, broke 2 ribs, out for 8 weeks (I may go crazy before then! :p)

Thanks all for the kind words. No, I don't think the wire wasn't put there on purpose. It just seemed to have fallen on its own. I believe it was maybe a cable TV wire or something. And the guys i was riding with did their best to hoist it up out the street, then, notified the neighbors and asked them to call the city. hopefully it's been taken care of.

Geez....sorry to hear about your spill.
Every time I'm on the LA River bike path I sometimes think about some homeless guy stretching a wire across the narrow path.....just a scary thought I come up with sometimes when I'm riding on that path.

Those heavy gauge wire I can spot them just in time to stop. Those very thin, almost invisible piano wires I fear most.....

Sorry to hear about that, Sean. I was looking forward to catching up with you at Lighthouse. (Socially, of course...I could never catch you on a bike!)

Wow Sean, really sorry to hear about your crash. Demerol and Morphine are very scary drugs...only because they make you feel so good when you're feeling no pain!

Get well soon.
