Oh yea, I was just trying to guess Josh's main intent for the club. Originally, I was thinking (again, guessing) that ultimately it is to build the brand, build a coaching base. And a racing team (several local teams?), seems a good way to do that. And I was impressed by (what I thought was) his vision of going even broader with a grass-roots kind of thing. Regardless, I'm pretty sure Ovo wouldn't be interested. :p

I dunno, the phrase "put up or shut up" comes to mind :D

We could use Ovoleg. Every team needs a rabbit.

Mark, a couple of group trips to Nor Cal would be great.

Of course, this is all pending my wife and me not getting pregnant. Once that happens, you probably won't see much of me for 4 or 5 years.

Well, with your knee problem this past year, and my schedule, we didn't see too much of eachother anyway! LOL

I signed up. Asians are suckers for anything free. :p

Looking forward to seeing what the team bike is going to be . . .

I know :( but I think I got it solved finally, thanks to SoCalCycling. It would be ironic if we started expecting now that I'm almost up to doing 60 mile rides again.

prrrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I'm too slow for this team anyways
A rabbit doesn't have to be fast overall. Just fast enough to go off the front mid race and let other teams bridge while we suck their wheels, then drop out of the race when we catch you for all we care. I suggested that for you because that seems to be what you do on every group ride anyway :p

Yea, that's ovo! Every time we approach a hill -- no matter how long or how short -- he gets all geared up and picks up the pace before the hill. He's usually a little bit ahead of everyone by the time the climbing actually begins, and then he red-lines for as long as he can... and curses while everyone passes him. And then he comes back to BF and talks about how he smoked everyone up (the first part of) the hill. :D

Having ridden only once with Ovo, I guess I can take your word for it. But I do know on the one ride he beat me up Old Topanga. Of course, beating me up a hill isn't all that hard to do.

It's easy to blow yourself up on the first hill of a 40-60 mile ride when you plan on cutting out at mile 15 and being home and posting on the forums before the group even hits their rest stop.

Now, what do I say to get my wife to let me start racing again?

Just emphasize the big picture -- biking promotes not only good physical health, but good mental health and a balanced life!

Keep in mind she has an abnormally high IQ, and that argument leaves the hole that I already do biking. Why should I be allowed to race?

edit: Not that I need permission, but I want the marriage to last.

The better question is...

Why shouldn't you be allowed to race?

So Vance, Mark, etc. will you be racing under this team next year? I'm going to "renew" my license soon and want to be on whatever team you guys will be on for next year, mainly because I'll probably do the same races and I like having teammates to warm-up and race with (especially if tactics come into play).

I created a user account already, and USA Cycling still has me on file! That brings me to another question: should I see if I can register as a cat 4 (I was a 4 road/3 track when I last had a license in 1997) or just start over again as a 5? What will you guys be racing as?

mkadam68
10-03-07, 11:08 PM
I'm a 4 and will hopefully be upgrading to 3 before the season is over. (ya, right). I raced from '95--'97 and left as a 4. I renewed last year, as a 4. So, you might just be able get back on as a 4.

urbanknight
10-03-07, 11:17 PM
Hmmm if you upgrade Vance and I won't get to race with you on most races (besides, have you WON a cat 4 race yet? ;) )

But what team are you riding for? I have no idea if I should just use this club since it's free or try to find a grassroots club in my area.

mkadam68
10-03-07, 11:31 PM
Yea...I'll be riding for Liquid Fitness. I also will keep my club memberships with SFVBC and Santa Clarita Velo. With Liquid Fitness, Jeff is the Team 4/5 Captain. I raced against him last year and it'll be a nice opportunity to work with him. We have a tentative camp scheduled for early November for a Sat--Mon up in the central coast area (San Luis Obispo, etc).

(No...didn't win, but got 2nd )

urbanknight
10-03-07, 11:37 PM
2nd place is the first loser... j/k that's actually pretty impressive. I know that even Cat 5 races are pretty intense and fast, and just being in the final sprint is an accomplishment alone. Although I won races as a junior, I never placed top 10 in any Cat 4 or Cat 5 crit.

I'll be keeping my SFVBC membership (I don't think they have ever been a USCF club, though.. strictly recreational). I'm going to see if my most recent club (Canyon Velo) is still active even, but it doesn't matter since that was then and this is now, and then it was one of the top junior development teams around.

VanceMac
10-03-07, 11:42 PM
Yes, Brian, I am getting the itch to try racing. As I've noted before, I'm mostly interested in road races, but would not be averse to playing the sacrificial lamb in support of teammates in a crit once in a while.

Yea...I can see it now..."Vance, you go off the front on lap 2. They'll chase you and tire out." 35 minutes later, we sprint it out for 2nd place. :D

Although I won races as a junior, I never placed top 10 in any Cat 4 or Cat 5 crit.I desparately need to get better positioning for the finale though. I'm hoping that just by having one year under my belt, I might be able to find the good wheels/trains in order to move up. This year, I could stay at the front throughout the race, but then found myself getting boxed in for the last 1/2-lap alot.

Hey, Vance, you do know that you'll need to get a license? About $60 a year. Or, you just pay an extra $10 each race for a daily temporary license.

road races favor the holocaust victim physique...

I dont really like the crit feel, too many people riding too close to me wheelsucking as they try and sprint past you in the last 200yards.

I guess I would do well in crits but I dont want to crash...and I know thats inevitable. I'll try a few rides with Liquid Fitness to see how they are though, if they're a nice group I might stick with it.

1) Become a member of the USAC club you want to race for (we're going with Liquid Fitness)
2) Go to www.usacycling.org and register for a racing license. List that club as the club you will race for.
3) Register in the races we register in. Carpool if you want, race, have fun, get droped, whatever.

Cool. That won't be until Feb probably but I'm sure there will be some base training to start on. That retreat sounds fun for the 4/5 group, so I'll see if I can get the Monday off for it.

Geez. My first year would have looked terrible. I got cold after cold after cold. I figure I'm immune to almost everything now! I will say that our school is the opposite, though. We've had teachers absent more days than present... although they don't return the next year. But thanks for reminding me, I need to fill out my stull sheet before it gets buried under the other junk flyers.

That is one mistake I made in choosing teaching as a profession. Although my work day is only 7 hours (7:30-3:00 with a half hour lunch), I can't have a "slow day" at the office. If I'm not feeling up to doing my job, the kids will be bored and make my life hell to the point that I wish i had just done my job.

Back on topic, I challenged myself to see what kind of pace I could hold today. To the Rose Bowl, 4 laps around it and back got me 22 miles in 1:14 for a 17.8 mph average (I was shooting for 18).

The best (or worst) part was this junior that couldn't be older than 15 started to pass me then held with me for 2 laps before I pulled off to go home. May he make it to the Olympics (I would say le Tour, but I don't want him on drugs)

Maybe start with time trials (road or track)-- Josh can certainly help out with that. Time trials are just against the clock, and you don't have to deal with riding close to other riders, and most of them are relatively flat so you don't have to starve yourself to death. It's a pretty low risk entry into racing, though it's quite different from mass start racing.
