Southern California - Liquid Cycling Team

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Tried to get her into riding (borrowed dad's mountainbike for a 4 mile trip), but she hates it. She wasn't at all interested in the "Wired to Win" gathering. I mentioned the sights she'll get to see, and reminded her that when we were dating she used to come out and support my auto racing. At least cycling is better for the environment and less expensive. I'll keep working that angle, but I do wonder how much time I'll have (if any) when the kids arrive. I'll probably be on a 3-5 year hiatus until they start school.
Oh, and it looks like you have 5 children?! I might have to keep her away from you, since she wants 4 and I only want 2.
Brian, why don't you buy her an entry level road bike? A mountain bike is heavy, bulky and not the least bit appealing (before all you mtbking types get bent out of shape, I merely mean that it isn't appealing to someone unfamiliar with riding!). Say to her that if she will just give road biking a try, you'll do ______ (fill in the blank with something SHE wants to do that you really don't). Then take her out and willingly ride with her and let her whine, cry, snivel if she wants, but do NOT push her too hard. Take her to areas that are pretty to ride in but not too many cars (the hardest thing to get used to, IMO). Also, introduce her to someone like me (I'm less scary in real life). I'd happily go riding with her to show her how to clip in and out of cleats, talk about girl related riding issues and just gab. I know for myself that the first two months of cycling were awkward, scary and frustrating. Having others gently push me helped, but if they pushed too hard, I retreated. That didn’t last long, of course, and now I’m a nut. So, you just don’t know – she may be riding doubles in a year’s time!
You may also want to talk to Jpconrad as he is excellent with supporting his lovely wife. Sonia is fabulous and has given it her all but suffered a crash that I believe scared her pretty badly (as it would have me). So, she backed off for awhile. John just backed off from it and recently she went out for a ride again once she was comfortable. He must be doing something right! ;)

ME, her main issue is the saddle, but she won't try other saddles. It just plain doesn't interest her at all. My only hope is once a year when she promises to do whatever I want for my birthday. Next year I might make her rent a tandem at Santa Monica Pier, but she really does have no interest in it. I'd love for you to meet her and change her mind, but I do respect that her choice in recreation is different than mine.
Say to her that if she will just give road biking a try, you'll do ______ (fill in the blank with something SHE wants to do that you really don't).
She's already got something in mind that is all but impossible to do. Not something that I don't like, but something that I can't seem to accomplish. Believe me, I love trying, and if I could accomplish it I would declare myself God's gift to women, but I haven't succeeded yet. If you know what I'm talking about and can give me any pointers, I'm willing to hear them.
So which Ridley is everyone getting?
Which ever one you're willing to pay for. Oh, you're not buying? My birthday is in January. Still no? Ah well.
I did look at the website just for the drool factor, and I am quite impressed with the geometry variety in the classic style frames. Their odd sized frames have much longer top tubes than their even sized frames, so most people will be able to find a size that will fit them. That would be great news for me since I have such a long torso and thighs that I have to get a large frame just for the top tube length (I literally look like I'm a kid hoping to grow into my current frame). If I had the money, I'd definitely be looking into their Scandium bike. I'll definitely keep them in mind for my next bike.

That was the imax film at the Museum of Science. I thought you were there with your sons? I invited her to come along and meet the gang, and explained that the film was science related, but she wasn't interested in anything having anything to do with people who ride bikes. She has admitted recently that she is too hard on my riding, and that what really bugs her is the time I spend on the forums (which I have reduced drastically recently).
Brian, check out the latest issue of the freebie magazine Southern California Bicyclist. I usually don't spend too much time with it, but there is actually an interesting article this month about cycling/training and how to work it into relationships. It's not as in-depth as you may need, but perhaps it's a starting point to find the author's complete work. The price is certainly right. Good luck!

See posts #142, 143, & 144.
Also, currently, we're in off-season mode. Less things now. WHen the racing seson kicks off, I'm sure we'll start seeing more stuff come along.

I see them around randomly. One guy upgrading from Cat5 to Cat4 for next year was on an SFVBC ride and I noticed his kit. I also saw someone in the team kit on a red bike riding down Lake Ave on Tues.
So how many members of this club are actually going to be racing. Will there be a strong presence of CAT4 Liquid Fitness guys at the local crits (Ontario, CBR, etc) in SoCal on a regular basis?
mkadam68
12-04-07, 09:05 AM
I'll be racing. Jared and Jim (Cat 4 team "captains") will also.
I'll be ordering my kit sometime this week (bibs, socks, jersey, windvest maybe, etc...). Just got an e-mail from Josh about Rudy Project deal. Looks good. I'll probably get sunglasses and helmet. Anyone have any ideas on how to keep glasses from getting all scratched?

No..no...I did like the first 10 miles of the Tour de Francis course on Saturday...boy, my legs were dead! I was going uphill and all I could sustain was like Zone 2-3. And that was only the warm-up!!
So, out of all the guys/gals who signed up how many have actually bought the kits and plan on racing in '08? Just curious as I'm still deciding on what team I want to race for next year.

Just curious as I'm still deciding on what team I want to race for next year. What cat are you? I know at least Jeff, Jared, Vance and myself are planning on racing next year (we're all Cat 4s, 'cept Vance--Cat 5). I am sure there are others as well throughout the categories. My first race this year looks like it might be the Ride It Like You Stole It (http://www.californiabicycleracing.org/01.27.08.bike.race.pdf) criterium. And I'm thinking of taking my son (12 y.o.) to this SCNCA Junior's Camp (http://scnca.org/). My personal goal is to upgrade to Cat 3 and compete for the BAR, so I'll definitely be racing as much as I can.
Within the next week, I'll be ordering 1 or 2 of these:
http://www.liquidfitness.com/ImageDownload.aspx?ProductID=1&GUID=4e19033b-bf27-442c-8e1c-d239c44a2469&MaxWidth=175

http://www.liquidfitness.com/ImageDownload.aspx?ProductID=2&GUID=79dca02b-058a-4186-8a6a-16f0b8bc9e22&MaxWidth=175
Probably one of these to fulfill this request (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=367316):
http://www.liquidfitness.com/ImageDownload.aspx?ProductID=5&GUID=bf0225f6-a72f-46cb-adb6-bce01d62b81a&MaxWidth=175(although, it probably won't arrive until I don't need it anymore  )
And a pair of these (probably):
https://www.rudyprojectusa.com/dsurge/prod/img/parts/sn940724dut.jpg
I won't be getting any arm/leg/knee warmers as I already have a pair (or 2) of each that do just fine. And probably won't be taking advantage of Josh's bicycle buy.

I'm worth too much. For $2 I expect a 5' parachute with my first, middle, and last name across it.
I might try to get her to let me do Conquer the Canyons in the "first timers" category unattached. Her biggest issues are the cost of the team kit ($150) and the distance I will travel for a race (because of the travel time which = time away from her)
I haven't seen the Conquer the Canyons race listed on the SCNCA calendar. And I do remember hearing (reading?) a rumor that it was a no-go this year. Anyone else confirm?

Yep, no go. They said costs were too high to put on the kind of event they wanted to. Bummer. :(

I'm a CAT4 and am looking for a new team this year, one that might actually have teammates at the races. I plan on doing Boulevard RR, some of the CBR crits, the Baker RR, the Ontario Crits, the San Dimas RR, and probably a couple other crits thrown in there as well. The LF kits are a bit pricey but they look pretty cool. What sizes are you going with?
I'm 6'3", 170lbs, 32" waist
Jersey: L or XL ?
Bibs: probably L if straps stretch a lot, XL might be too roomy down below ?
Vest: probably XL
Arm warmers: probably L but M might work ?

...one that might actually have teammates at the races. This was my primary reason in looking around, as well. I've got a nice club up here (Santa Clarita Velo), but I just didn't have team support in the races.

Getting dropped isn't as much of a concern for me in road races. Plenty of people get dropped in road races, and you don't get called. I hate getting dropped in crits because that usually means you have a lap left before the official tells you to get off the course.

Okay, we're trying to organize some rides (hopefully regular) for the team (Cat 4/5s at this point). My initial thought is that we need to know where everyone lives, so we can find a centrally located starting point (if possible). So far, we're looking at December 15, 22 & January 5 for rides. If these dates sound good, we'll need some routes from that area.
I'd also like to do a team meeting to discuss goals, plans & strategies, etc...make it into like a brunch or something. As I get more details (currently waiting on a response), I'll let you all know.
