Introductions - Hello from Detroit!

Good Morning/Evening/Night everyone, I'm Paul and I'm planning on touring through Michigan on bike. I'm a newbie to the forum (obviously) and to the world of bicycle touring, a good friend of mine does it every summer and loves it, so I'm going to give it a try. I've read some of the posts in the "Touring for Newbies" thread and do plan to read more.

Hello Paul, what kind of bike have you got? Where's your tour going in Michigan?

I don't own a touring bike as of yet, but I have been looking on Ebay and Craigslist. I own an early 60's Schwinn Cruiser that belonged to my uncle. 1970-something World Traveler that belonged to my mother and a few BMX Bikes. As for my touring in Michigan, all over. Start pedaling and end up back home.

Shoot, that World Traveler could make a good touring bike if it fits you :D .

My one piece of advice: stay out of Frankenmuth after Thanksgiving :) .

The world traveler needs a lot of work. Wheels, tires, brake cables, brake shoes, chain. The cassette probably needs a good cleaning. It's been hanging in my garage for years, my father told me repeatedly don't sell it or throw it away, so it's been hanging around ever since. As for Frankenmuth, I stay far from that city at all times.

Michigan touring is great! I tour the state every year on the Michigander, hence my user name.

I strongly recommend you do the Michigander for your first time touring. It's great fun and in case of break downs it's easy to get help from the other riders, and that can come in handy when you have 3 flats in a row. Plus, you can get driven in to the next destination if you crash. Supported tours are a lot of fun. It depends year to year, but 400-800 people do the ride.

Well, if you can do mid summer the michigander is just about impossible to beat. The Dalmac isn't supposed to be bad either, but I've never done that one.
