Good Morning,
I posted the following in the intro forum, but it was suggested I say "hi" here also. As always, any comments/rcommendations are always welcome. Any good clubs in the San Diego area for someone like me?
Thanks,
Chris

"Hey all,
I've been registered on here for a few years but never really been active. I've had bikes on and off for years, but never really got serious. Well, I now need and want to get serious about riding. At this point, a 4 mile ride gets me winded so I know I need to build up endurance. I just picked up a Randonee with the aspirations of doing centuries and rides like the MS150. Other than the obvious of saddle time, any other recommendations?"

First off, welcome! :) As for San Diego rides, others on here will have to help with that. I'm up in the LA area. We do have BF organized rides that convene in and around the SD area, so please join on those. And your aspirations to ride the MS150 is a great goal. I've ridden that ride two years in a row, and I wholeheartedly encourage others to do so if they can.

Welcome!

You might want to check out this club http://northcountycycleclub.com/index.htm

They are based in North County SD and have "cruiser" rides that might be a good entry point for you as well as more traditional road rides when you build endurance. Another one is the San Diego Bike Club (SDBC). Their weekend rides start at UC Cyclery and they have rides for all levels of riders.

Is this another T & A thread?

Time In The Saddle and Anaerobic Short Sprints, of course. A few of us are into Lengthy Elevation Gain Sessions, too.

P.S. Welcome Chris!!!

I brought an extra saddle to work and have been sitting on it for weeks in my cubicle. So far it's done no good at all. I hate quack science.

By the way, don't be scared off by the ride profile of many of the roadie group rides in SoCal BikeForums. If you want to go riding on shorter, flatter rides, just start a ride thread and there's a good chance you'll find some interest.

Soon you'll know who to listen to and who to ignore.

You're in the right place if you want to up that mileage. Since I joined here I've gone from thinking a 10 mile ride was too long, to riding my first century, to do a Century a Month, to figuring I'll probably make 2008 my year to do a double century. In other words, they'll drive you crazy! :D

But nice try, just listen to those that have been here longer. HGH and EPO will definitely make you faster and stronger, why else would the pros do it?

Yeah, watch out! I now enjoy semi-regular century rides, and there's these crazy roadies who keep trying to drag me out for a double century. I'm not sure I ever want to ride that far in one day, but there's people who are very convincing.

But whatever... ride whatever rides you most enjoy. I won't drive far for a short ride, but you're not far away. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to a relaxed cruise sometime. After all, I've been known to go on 6 mile non-commuting rides. (Commuting rides are only 3 miles.) And not just back when I thought my 5 mile rides were painfully long, but even now I enjoy my occasional 6 mile cruise.

Thanks for the warm welcome so far and the great tips. I really hope to be able to do centuries by next year and definetly the MS150 next fall. Somehow I don't think I'll be ready for this one!;)

When is it again? I'll consider it only if you'll help make sure I don't drown. Do elf costumes come with flotation devices? I might need it since it's a pool swim, and as you know, I'm a sinker, not a floater.

I'd love to be able to commute a few days a week, the only problem I see is getting from the Poway area where I live to downtown where I work. On the highway, it's about 18 miles one way and I'm sure much longer on surface steets. Also I have to be at work by 0700, so that's means leaving when it's way dark I would guess.

I plan to ride around Poway a bit this weekend, maybe around 7-10 miles.

Plan to be there, but it all depends on how well my cross country team does (I'm the coach, not a participant :o). If they go to CIF, the semi-finals are held on 11/10, so I couldn't make it to Solvang. And I'm not going to sabotage them [laughs an evil laugh].

Make a list (spreadsheet) of all the local rides you do, generally ranked from easy to hard. You can add routes as you find them, be creative. Then check off each ride as you do them. You need something like six of each before you graduate from that route. That doesn't mean you have to do that route six times in a row, or that once graduated you never do it again. But it does give you a plan that naturally takes you up the ladder towards harder and longer rides. Keep a short log of your daily rides and work your way up. It might take you six months of four rides a week, but then you should be ready for a century. If you are like me, and every so often because of work or something, you fall out of shape. You return to the beginning and work your way up the chart. Club riding is a great way of staying motivated to train in between club rides. Nobody likes to be dropped and it is a real kick in the pants.

I started off with riding the SR-56 bike path. There is an entrance from the SW intersection of Penasquito and eastbound SR-56 exit ramp. The ride itself is about 16 miles round trip if you turn back at the cu-de-sac area. Remember it's more difficult going eastbound than west, so don't use up all your energy on the way out (westbound).

There are not that many people on SR-56 bike path, and you'll only be crossing traffic light intersections a few times.

I think there is a path that runs north-south along I-15 that allows you to enter SR-56 bike path; but I'm not sure.

Don't forget to create a Bikejournal account and log all your miles, assigning them to the BikeForums Group. We will need you next year when we shoot for 2nd place.

Hey Chris, you live pretty close to where I do. If you want to ride sometime, let me know. My recommendation is just to stick with it, endurance builds slowly.

welcome to the clan, I ride both MTB and roadie, MTB rides are good in your area. Roadie is good on the 56 bike path.

The path entrence is under the 56 bridge (east side) on Poway/PQ blvd right before it meets Carmel Mt Road. If you see the car wash and Hollywood video, you went to far. O&B on just the trail is about 14 miles. Good climbs on the way back. Dry heat on the hill going up to blk mt rd so save some boost for that section.
