hi everyone,

my name’s rasheed. i’m from toronto. i just wanted to drop a little something here in the intro forum to introduce myself and say hi to everyone.

a little info on me:
i’m 26 yrs old, married with a kid on the way. born and raised in toronto, canada. wife’s from london, uk. my wife and i are both converts to islam, and of filipino decent. i work full-time in an addiction and mental health centre as a data entry clerk...

i’ve been browsing the forums for a while now and finally decided to register for an account today. i was shown this forum a while back when a friend and i were looking for forum designs to give us some ideas – we were helping out some guys design another discussion forum (focused mainly on religion). since then, i’ve been coming back to check stuff out, reading posts here and there.

finding this messageboard re-kindled my interest in biking, which i haven’t really done much of since highschool. i wanted to get back into it for a number of reasons, one of them being that both my wife and i wanted to get back in shape - since i started working at the hospital, i’ve gained about 30 some-odd pounds and i’ve also developed a bit of a gut (when i started working here at the hospital, i weighed around 125-130lbs... i’m now around 160 something – damn deskjob and cafeteria food!!!). she wanted a treadmill, i wanted to ride.

my brother had an old mountain bike lying around, so i started with that, riding to work every now and then (the ride’s about 25km, there and back – downhill to work, uphill back home). a few weeks ago, i decided to get a new bike... 1. because the bike i was using wasn’t mine in the first place... 2. because it was too big for me and i found my back hurting after a while on the long ride (i’m about 5’7” and the old bike – i think – is a medium). i got a lot of help from reading the mountain bike forum on this board (thanks guys), seeing what guys thought of certain bikes, what was better for the beginner – full-suspension or hardtail... costs and whatnot...

i finally decided on the gary fisher tassajara. i found a shop here that had the 2002 model with disc brakes in a small and ended up grabbing it for an alright price (considering bikes here in canada seem to cost a bit more than bikes in the states). the bike is stock except for the end bars i had put on them. so far it’s great. i haven’t gotten a chance to take it off road just yet, but hopefully i’ll get a chance to do so this weekend. i’m planning of checking out one of the old trails i used to ride back in highschool... the guy at my LBS told me that they’ve cut some new trails there. so we’ll see.

a little info the new bike:
2002 gary fisher tassajara – black/red (small).

Welcome rasheed!

Nice bike. Looks like you're well prepared to get back into cycling. You might enjoy checking out the Commuting section of the forum for tips and war stories, if you haven't already.

Welcome aboard rasheed

I like your mtb (it's actually nicer than my hardtail :p)

there are a bunch of riders from canada (and many from toronto) you probably could find a few riding buddies here on the forums :)
