It will be a great warm-up ride for the Tour de Tucson, that I am doing the following week.

too far to drive same day, too expensive to stay overnight
I'm in for the century, and have a room (assuming my registration got to Planet Ultra).
This is gonna be cool!

Yippee, yippee! And Happy, you can stay on my couch the night before if you don't want to drive from Torrance. I think Scoot's car holds three bikes (look how I'm volunteering the man to drive, but he knows he gets $ pitched in toward gas, and his Mcmuffinbreakfastgreasebomb bought for him :D).

Not intending to be gratuitously self-promotional (but knowing that it is so) -
The Solvang's Finest Century route (and support on the route) is exponentially better than the Prelude; the entry fee includes a t-shirt, water bottle, goodie bag AND a delicious post-ride buffet lunch; and you get to ride and enjoy the checkpoints without the crazy crowds of people. We also negotiate discounted room rates at the hotels, if you're staying in town.
In addition to that, and more importantly, the proceeds are donated to a very worthwhile cause -Challenged Athlete's Foundation.
:-)

Deb, I read that the jerseys are sold out. Still the case? Otherwise, I'll send check for reg with donation. Thanks!

Well, the biggest gripe I have with the Prelude and the Solvang Century is that both rides have become too crowded, and IMO, their BBQ absolutely blows and they charge $11 for it (one piece of dry chicken, cold beans, soggy salad, hard dinner roll - yuck!).
I'm looking forward to a less crowded ride and a little different of a route, personally.

I gave some serious thought into flying out for this one. I found a $265 airfare from CLT to LAX which is about as cheap as it gets I guess. But by the time I pay for airport parking, $80 each way for my bike, car rental, lodging and ride fees it adds up quickly. I think I'll wait till I can spend a bit more time out there instead of just a quick weekend which is what this trip would have to be. So once again y'all have dodged the bullet and won't have to put up with me on this ride. :(
merider1
10-23-07, 11:42 AM
Well, we aren't dodging any bullet! It would be nice if you could join. Sorry, but yes, these things DO add up, in a hurry. This is why I'd rather get up at 4:00am to drive up there than get a hotel the night before. :(

We MAY have a few jerseys - but will not pre-sell them. IF they're available, we'll offer them at rider registration.

That IS a lot of money for a weekend- but NOT too much for a week-long trip. We have GREAT routes at our Solvang Spring Tour in the Spring!

Well...
because our banquet is held indoors, and hosted by the Royal Scandinavian, we were told we can't do a beer garden. However, there's a NEW event coordinator at the hotel - so I'll check back into that. I'm fairly certain, however, that the answer is going to be NO. There IS a bar at the restaurant; and they do serve a good variety of beer!

ME, you missed the great BBQ last weekend at the Spook. Hot fresh Tri-tip and chicken, stove hot beans maybe a few jalapenos in there, fresh salad, great rolls baked that morning and it was all included in the price of admission.:D

Oh, that's it...I'm not coming.
:p j/k. If I want beer, there are at least five places within walking distance to get one.

Yes, like in the next room! The bar is right there and the beer is flowing, especially after a long ride:D
See you there! I'll be at a check point to serve you fine refreshments and awesome edibles.

There's Lake Cachuma off the 154 about 14 miles from Solvang. Also the Rv park in Buellton right off the 101 is Flying Flags Park about 3 miles from Solvang.

I hope to be there along w/my hubby. Depends on the girls' cross country team I coach. If they make it to CIF, that is held on the same day. They would really need to run their butts off, but we still have a chance. I really shouldn't root against them. ;)

Early registration closes THIS Saturday. So if you want to avoid the late fee, get your entries in NOW! 100% of the late fees are donated to CAF - so we're happy to accept that too! Registration closes November 6th.

Hey Deb, a couple of cycling folks not on BF are asking about reg fees and what part goes to the Challenged Athletes? They like to know before signing up to do any charity ride. :) Oh, and I did give them the link to the ride, but they would please like clarification...?? Thanks!
