I bought some North Roads for my wife's hybrid (the flat bars were killing her wrists) and they've been great. Very comfortable.

For those planning on using a nexus hub, how are you going to route the cable?
shapelike
10-16-07, 07:34 PM
You can get clamp on cable guides of different diameters (I think Axiom is making some for 2008, Problem Solvers probably makes some). I suppose you could run full housing + cable ties but I'm not certain of that.

That'll be a sweet Eurotrash build. :) I think the only thing I'd change if it was my bike is going w/ a different headset and using Koolstop salmon pads. My experience with the Cane Creek headsets hasn't been good, but maybe I just ran into some lower end models or duds.

Haha i think our builds are complete opposites while still going for the same idea. Without going through and totaling weights though I'm guessing yours is a decent amount lighter than mine.
Now deciding a drivetrain length... Are you just guessing at first or have some reasoning behind yours?

Since all the cool kids are doing it, here's my build (really a swap, as I already have all of this built to a 54cm frame):
Frame: Rob Roy (56cm, Green)
Fork: Standard IRO RR fork
Stem: Thomson Elite 110mm 5deg
Headset: Chris King Black 1 1/8" Threadless
Seatpost: Thomson Elite 350mm 27.2mm
Seatpost Collar: Salsa Liplock 30.0mm
Handlebars: On-one Midge
Brakes: Shimano Deore LX Canti (NOS)
Levers: Cane Creek SCR-5C Compact
Cranks: Bulletproof 165mm 110mm BCD
Chainring(s): 44t Salsa/40t Sugino (gold)
Chain: Shimano 9spd
Fixed Cog: Surly Dingle Cog 17/21t
Free Wheel:White Industries Dos Eno 17/19t
Wheels: Phil Wood K-O Fixed/Free laced to Salsa Delgados
Tires: 700x35c Michelin Transworld Sprints
Saddle: Honey Brooks B17
Pedals: Crank Brothers Eggbeater
Rack: Surly Nice Rack
I plan to get some nicer fenders but right now I have some planet bike ones and they're tight but they work with the 35mm tires. How this'll work with my varying chain-length setup (due to having 6 gear options) remains to be seen.

This thread intrigues me, but I'm afraid I really don't know anywhere near enough to try this. For building this frame out as a fixed gear training bike, nothing special, no commuter bells and whistles, what sort of price range would I be looking at?

Your price range depends on how much shopping you want to do, and how "low" you want to go on your parts. The full Rob Roy from IRO is $600 right now. Theres some discrepancy about a discount build with the group buy, so don't count on that. My build comes out to ~1200, but thats all new parts, plus who knows what sale I could stumble upon. You could do a build from almost complete nashbar/performance and come out alot cheaper, or spend the 3 months waiting for the frame by doing some shopping on ebay/craigslist.

Still undecided about a bunch of stuff, but something like:
Goal: Fair weather commuter, general runabout bike. With spare gearing and tires to run it offroad on occasion with a simple night-before or morning-of drivetrain/tire swap.
Frame: Rob Roy (54cm, Orange)
Fork: Stock IRO that comes with.
Stem: 3TTT Mutant, silver
Headset: ??? Prolly something cheap. Who makes the ones with the tapered needle bearings?
Bottom Bracket: Phil or something else that's adjustable.
Seatpost: ??? Something used or NOS, classic, silver, 80s 12sp vintage
Seatpost Collar: IRO
Handlebars: Nitto Randonneur.
Tape: Custom sewn leather I have on hand that pretty much matches the Brooks green
Brakes: Tektro CR720 cantis... or mini-Vs... or used/NOS Shimano XT M730...
Levers: Tektro RL726
Cranks: Vintage DuraAce/Record/Mighty 2-ring, dump one for a chain-guard ring on the outside.
Chainring: 48t, silver. Also a spare 38t.
Chain: Whatevah--doesn't someone make a stainless chain? Spare cut for alt gearing.
Fixed Cog: Something silver, 17t
Free Wheel: Shimano? 17t. Plus a spare 20t
Wheels: Prolly Iro, flip-flop rear.
Tires: slick-ish, 28c w/ kevlar, cheap. Also a spare set of wide knobbies.
Saddle: Green Brooks B17 Special
Pedals: MKS with metal toeclips, single leather straps
Other: spacer-mounted bell, some kind of afterthought front brake cable hanger, saddle bag, wine cork bar end plugs. Frame saver treatment before build.
If I was going to go all out, no-expense spared with this, I'd have the frame/fork stripped and nickel plated; all components would be copper plated.
If it turns out that I end up using this bike more often than not for commuting, then Hondo fenders, a lighting system (Shimano dyno hub), and front or rear rack. Maybe a 3 or 8sp system if I get tired of one gear. Maybe a 80cc 2-stroke engine kit just for the fun of it.

The orders are closed. Your only chance would be to contact IRO and ask if someone has backed out.
One quick question I have heard that the max tire clearance is around 35mm on the rob roy (I'm in for a 58 in orange), is that dictated by the rear triangle or the fork? What I mean is that If I switch up with a different fork can I accommodate wider tires?

it's the same design with better lighter materials... or bearings, I forget which.
edit: probably worth the extra $15. Save by packing lunch for 2 days to make up the difference.
Thanks a lot, rocks in head. I went on Nashbar expecting to spend $15 and then I looked around: oh, how about some D/A downtube shifters for another neo-retro project bike, okay and I need a brake cable hanger, and a new derailleur, oh might as well spring for the S-6 headset, blah blah blah.
My $15 order just cost me $160.

At $160 it is simple. One color. Choose your size.
What in Hades do you think you should get for $160? Custom braze-ons, custom sizes, custom colors?

Has any of you ever tried to build a bike frame? Do you realize that if you bought the tubing and dropouts and a fork from a supplier like Nova Cycles, you'd pay MORE THAN $160?
And you poseur yuppie dimwits want to chisel it down more, and get MORE for that price? What the phuck?

I bailed on this group buy because it changed from a purchase of instock items at a discount to a full-on special order. It is a nice frame and all but waiting like 6 months was not worth it. In the interim I picked up a black soma double cross (2007) complete in my size off e-bay for $600. Came with 9 speed ultegra.
