If I were to replace the stock fork with one of these inexpensive models, which would you suggest?

why not go carbon for almost the same price?

I would definitely go carbon. I imagine that another steel unicrown fork is going to weigh almost the same, if not more.

That doesn't sound right. Post pictures so we can judge for ourselves.

Kind of hard to capture with indoor light and matte black paint.Hopefully more people who have received their frame can chime in.

I'd feel weird putting carbon on a commuter. Plus, I'm not fond of the look.

Wish I had a weight for the IRO fork. oh well...I guess I'll just stick with the stock one.

Don't sweat it. Email those photos to Tony at IRO and explain to him that you'd like a replacement frame. This is a pretty common warranty situation (and it's why Tony ordered extra frames in different sizes/colours). If you're new to IRO bikes know that Tony is the customer service master. I'm sure he'll do what he can to help you out.

Yeah, I'm just trying to verify if this is a common deal among the new frames or a defect. Obviously there is probably nothing wrong with the structural integrity and perfectly rideable but I don't like paying money for non-straight tubes. If it is a unique problem, I'll try to contact Tony.

It's definitely a unique problem, and Tony should replace your frame no-questions-asked. I had some problems in the last group buy, and all it took was a phone call to IRO to get it straightened out.

Have you received a GB frame yet?

So, I gots mine and I am not sure how I feel about a few things. On the seat tube when they were brazing the bottle mounts on there is some sloppy random weld spots. They look like big paint bubbles. The paint job is somewhat lacking as well..

Will shoot some photos when I get home today. Not sure if it worth mentioning to Tony. Other than those things, the frameset is looking sweet. I guess I have to keep in mind that it was $160.

Precisely...$160. Mines mostly going to be a rain beater. I've got a lot of nice components for it and I anticipate it being a really sweet ride, but if the paint job is subpar or the bottle cages aren't perfectly straight, I'm not gonna cry about it. Mine's supposed to arrive on the 20th.

I'm building mine as a race/pit bike. By December it will look five years old. I'm also throwing a super light Steelman front fork, and FSA carbon cranks on it. Should cut some fat off it's @ss.

I was talking about the first group buy. My frame will arrive today.

FWIW, the quality on the four group buy frames I received in the first go was excellent.

hey...i'm buying parts right now and it's been i while since i set up cantis. do i need to buy cable hangers for the front AND back?

just a steerer tube one for the front

thanks a lot!

another questions: if i buy a set of cantis, do the brake themselves ususally come with a straddle wire?
if not, which size should i buy?

bonechilling

Yes, every canti I know of comes with straddle cables. Lots of people change them out, but the stock ones should suffice.

Nope, neither have I, and I ordered a black frame. It could have something to due with the fact I'm in Europe. Are you in the US or Canada?

Does anyone want a black 58? I got mine in yesterday but don't think I'll be using it. Asking the frame cost plus what I paid for shipping (12 bucks). It's currently in Brooklyn.

Got mine, and the orange looks great. I've just applied frame saver, and when that dries, I'll start the building process. I'll take some stage-by-stage photos.

I have something maybe a bit similar, the bottom bottle mount on the downtube is wonky on mine, it's pointing off to the side a bit, and there's a slight dent below it.

Here you can see - side view - we're looking at the profile of one mount, while the other is pointed as us a bit, you can see the opening of the hole:

And I can't recall the last time I compared my frame to a protractor.

So my frame showed up ...

The colour is awesome (reddish-orange), I like that a lot. The quality of the paint job, however ... man. The paint is so thin that you can see the notes written on the tubing but the frame builders. The back of the seat tube cluster is barely even covered in paint. So ya, that's a bit ****ty. Other than that though it's good. I might keep an eye on the forums to see if anyone else has issues like this, but odds are I'll just build it up and be happy with it. First one the find the perfect shade of nail polish/touch-up paint wins $5 - I get the feeling I'll be touching this thing up a fair bit. ;)

I guess that's one of the advantages to choosing the matte black option...

Ya, really. Thanks, Krylon! That's okay, I always get the black/subdued colour scheme paint job if there's a choice. My current bike is black/white, the two bikes before that were both black. It's time for me to ride something bright and obnoxious. ;)

What do you guys think of drilling a bottom bracket hole? My other steel cross bike has one, and I've shook water out of it on more than one occasion. I think I might take a drill to this before I put the BB in.

Mine also seems to suffer from the "bent tube" problems that you guys are seeing. I'm not sure if it's bent or if it's designed that way. Whatever the case, I doubt I would have noticed it/cared if I hadn't read about it here first.

I don't think it bothers me, but would be interested in what Tony says if someone takes the time to ask him.

I can't really decide what to do about my "bent tube/****ed up weld spots" thing. It is bothering me more than it should. My free Flickr just got filled up, so I need to find a new host to post some photos of my frame.

Oh yeah ODH, my paint is the same way...

mine has this too...it's like where the bottle bosses are the tube is slightly flattened. which is odd b/c the same effect isn't present around the bottle bosses on the downtube.

i do wonder if i would've noticed if it wasn't for other folks pointing it out. the gloss on the paint is really what helps diagnose it.

this wouldn't effect the structural integrity of the frame to any great extent, would it?

I believe the frame just isn't quite perfect from the factory. I think I'm just going to deal with it and do a super budget build and call it a day. Especially since this is not an isolated case, I'm sure the other frames might have the same problem.

+1

I see a pattern here, and I know for sure wasn't Tony's fault...it is the factory he used and they messed up for what ever reason....

I should be getting mine within the hour and I am not even going to look around the water bosses, and I will ride it like the little slut bike she is:) and not worry about it

if I had purchased it new from Tony, yep I would give a call and work out a new replacement frame

but unless you want to wait another 5 months for new ones

will I ever do this again ???...........hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

no, I don't think so

I posted pictures to show what I saw, and I let Tony know, just in case it's a quality control issue that he wants to follow-up with the factory. Issue over for me, time to build this thing and ride it!

hey I just got mine....you just looking at it in person, I think people are going to be asking where you got the bike with the sweeet curved rear stays....man those really set the bike off :)

now that it's finally over, I am happy

also is it me, but are the main frames extremely light...IIRC my MarkV frame was heavier

is it possible Tony got these made with a better quality steel??

I think this is my sentiments as well. I'm not sure, but I don't think it's an issue for me. I'll sleep on it. ;)
