The previous RRGB thread is a little "cluttered" and terribly confusing for anyone new. I would like to use this thread for simple and direct information.

The present status:

The price is $160 for a frameset (one frame, one fork, nothing else) in your choice of Orange, Black or Dark Green.

A $60 deposit buys you in.

Frames will be ordered after the end of the sale in October, it will take months after that to get your frame.

The RRGB order page at IRO is down.
http://www.irofixedgear.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=25 This sort of thing is reported to have happened before. The proprietor is on vacation, apparently not updating any business while away. Previous Group Buy participants seem largely unconcerned by this. I recommend their example.

Here's the Rob Roy Info page with a geometry chart. There will be a size 62 frame offered in the group buy - no specs on it, but pretty surely a continuation of the trend. http://www.irofixedgear.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8

If you've got any updates or information please add to this thread.

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but i the frame/fork disc compatable? It sort of looks like they are in the pictures, but I can't tell for sure.

Also, is it 520? The IRO website doesn't seem to mention the brand of steel they use.

Thanks!

I've been wanting a singlespeed... darn if this won't cut into my budget for a geared bike. I may not be able to resist though.

I just looked at the website and, too bad these are single speed. I would jump in if these could take gears. Anyway, they appear to be priced very well, even for SS. You guys will end up with a fine SS bicycle. I ride too many hills and, at my age I need to downshift.

Mines getting a Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub. Gears? Hell yeah! Derailers? Hell no!

how does a nexus hub work with drop bars? i thought it only worked with a grip shifter?

Not disc compatible. And I don't know the kind of steel, sorry...

For the Nexus 8 speed you can also order the Alfine shifter as it's the same hub internally. It's a rapid fire style shifter that'll mount on any diameter bar.

rnhood, there are chain tensioners that have derailleur hangers.
revell makes some, but i'm sure other companies do as well.
so you could get a rob roy and still run gears,
especially since it can take a 130mm hub.

Good news! The group buy webpage is fixed.

Most of the IRO frames (excluding the Jamie Roy and Angus) are double butted 4130 steel. The main triangle is butted but the stays are straight gauge. This is the same configuration as Reynolds 520 (which is really just "Kleenex" vs "tissue").

Just placed my order for a 56cm green to replace the 54cm blue that's just a touch too small for me. Plus, green is superior to blue.

I wonder if Tony's vacation was actually a trip to the Interbike show.

This group buy frame is for my wife. It'll get a Nexus (or perhaps a black Alfine) hub and (no insults, please) an ebike conversion kit from werelectrified.com.

Nice, plenty of paychecks to waste on the build until then.

Well i've priced out my parts. Again, it's going to cost me ~$1000 total to build the bike the way i want (frame price included). :(

:D

Fortunately i've already got a CX bike and a fixed gear/SS bike so i can let the frame sit on the side while i slowly collect parts for it. It'll be Bike Build 2008 for me. :)

Exactly! I hope to build mine the day it arrives.

We ought to have a BFRRGB Build thread with projected builds. That ought to give everyone some ideas on what to buy if they haven't made up their minds yet.

Let's compare notes:

Frame: Rob Roy (56cm, orange)
Fork: Carbon/aluminum steerer cx fork (no name made by one of the big Taiwanese factories)
Stem: Ritchey Pro (31.8mm, aluminum)
Seatpost: Ritchey Pro (27.2mm, carbon)
Seatpost Collar: Axiom (bolt-on)
Handlebars: Ritchey Pro Biomax (42cm. 31.8mm)
Brakes: Tektro (them there fancy new ones)
Cranks: SRAM Omnium (172.5mm, 144bcd)
Chainring: Sugino Messenger (42T, 144bcd, 1/8")
Chain: KMC K710 (1/8")
Cassette Cog: Surly (18T, 1/8")
Wheels: Meh? Still on the fence ... probably hand-built w/ a 10-speed hub
Tires: Michelin Mud 2
Saddle: Selle Italia SLR (black)
Pedals: Crank Brothers Eggbeater SL

Looks like our bikes will be twins. My post isn't going to be carbon.

Let's compare notes:...

Frame: Rob Roy (54cm, orange)
Fork: IRO Rob Roy Fork (frameSET remember?) :)
Stem: IRO 100mm black
Seatpost: Thomson Elite
Seatpost Collar: Salsa Liplock (probably a 30mm like the previous group buy frame)
Handlebars: Generic Nashbar 40cm
Brakes: Avid Shorty 4 (already have a leftover set so i don't need to buy them), Cane Creek levers and Nashbar inline cross levers
Cranks: IRO 170mm (from IRO Build Kit)
Chainring: IRO 46t (from IRO Build Kit)
Chain: KMC Z-Chain (from IRO Build Kit)
Cassette Cog: IRO 18T (from IRO Build Kit) for fixed and an 18 or 20T freewheel on the other side.
Wheels:
Rims - Velocity Deep-V 32 hole (probably Lime Green or Electric Blue)
Hubs- IRO 32 hole high flange fixed/free (rebadged Formula hubs)
Tires: Michelin Mud 2 (i have a new set at home from another bike), also a set of Continental Gatorskins for road riding
Saddle: Forte Fusion
Pedals: Crank Brothers Eggbeater SL
Headset: FSA Orbit (from IRO)

Other misc stuff include MKS chain tugs, brake cables/housing, cable hanger for front brake, spokes, bottle cages, etc.

Now if i can just figure out what handlebar tape color to pick i'll be set. No black, no white, no pink (i did pink on the other fixie already).

Ya, I'll be tossing the fork in the parts pile right away but the one I saw to replace it illicited "sexy thoughts" at first glance. Any rational thought went right out the window and my gear ***** true nature took over. Whatever the case, I can't wait for the bike to come together.

@sfcrossrider, Pro post or WCS? I ran the numbers and the carbon Pro post is lighter/cheaper than the alu WCS. I've been running a 31.6mm carbon post on my Devinci for 2 years now, so I'm willing to risk carbon. Be sure to quote this post when I stab myself in the ass months from now.

^^^ Hahahah! I had a crrbon post on a cx bike for years with no problems... I'm sure your ass will be fine.:D

Can someone point out an internet source for the Alfine shifter in the U.S.? I couldn't find them at Jenson USA or Harris Cyclery.

AFAIK they are only available in Europe at the moment.

not sure what color I want. orange sounds neat, so does black.

I was really sold on orange and almost got one, but I looked at my Kona and decided that one orange bike was enough. I opted for black. The glossy black ought to look great.

having trouble fitting the rob roy. I'm fairly new at fitting my bikes, I'm 6' tall with a longer torso and shorter legs. I've been trying to find a webpage that just tells you how to measure yourself then puts it into a formula for a bike size, but I can't find one. I think the 58 seems reasonable.

TimJ

I would guess the 58" or 60" would be the size you want to go with. Depends on how short your legs are. If the standover on the 60" is adequate then probably that because the tt will be longer. The Iros are sized small for their given size listing. I'm 5' 11" and am getting the 58 because it's more like a 56 which is good for me.

As for websites I'm sure others will help you out.

sfcrossrider

I'm 6,1 and I'll be using a 58cm for racing sscx.

The folks I know who have them went directly to their LBS who then ordered it for them. Dunno if they had to go through a Shimano distributor or QBP, but it was here in 'merica so it is doable. Living in Denver I feel somewhat certain I can track one down through one of the many LBSs.

Good luck.

The figures you get from Zinn's widget are for a traditional (horizontal top tube) bike. Converting to a semi-compact frame is a bit tricky. If you really want to get it right, either be very good at trigonometry or use some graph paper, a protractor, and a ruler.

I'm toying with the idea of building up this frame as an "around town" bike. Not quite a commuter, but something with fenders, wider tires and a rack for groceries etc. I would like to have a fairly upright riding position though, maybe with albatross handlebars. Any thoughts as to whether that makes sense with this frame? Thanks

It makes alot of sense. In fact, i think that's what the majority of the people buying the frame are going to be doing. :)

sping

Interesting idea with the Albatross handlebars. Perhaps with a sprung Brooks saddle given how much weight will be on it with an upright position. That setup would be sure to fulfill my goal of being a painful embarrassment to my son as he grows up (only 18 months now). I enjoy wearing sandals with socks, so I think I have the goal covered already.

I'm interested in a geared hub idea, with fenders, rack etc., for urban commuting and utility riding. My biggest misgiving about the Rob Roy is the rear-facing dropouts. With fenders and hub gears I imagine it'll be a royal pain to fix flats.

I'm also a little down on the tire clearance, as I want to be able to put studs on it for winter, so need 35mm clearance with fenders. Perhaps I should just pick up a beater hybrid for that off craigslist and stop worrying about it.

period3

I've ordered a 56cm rob roy and plan to build it up as a commuter that will be ridden mostly on pavement, but also some dirt trails. I'd like to use fenders.

The IRO site says the maximum tire size with fenders is 32mm. In some other threads I've read that some people have trouble properly fitting a 35mm fender over a 32mm tire.

Is anyone else planning on adding fenders - and if so, what tires will you be using?

Chasseur

I use the Perf Kevlar touring tires they always sell for like $12, 28 width. I've done probly 7000+ miles loaded commuting using 2 rears and one front and I've never flatted. And the ones I've bought have been really true and round. They are rather snug on my mavic rims.

Can't. Wait. For. Rob Roy.

Replacing my old steel Gitane cx commuter.

I'm going to build mine up like that. I was thinking that 28mm Ruffy-Tuffy tires would be a good compromise between cushy and fast.

yes

The exact tire clearance for the rob roy isn't well specified anywhere. My narrow fenders fit my conti gatorskin 28c well. I wouldn't want to go any larger tire wise with those fenders. Hybrid fenders will easily cover 35c, but would probably need to be cut to fit into the rob roy.

Chasseur

Thanks, useful info. Where is the obstruction for hybrid fenders on the RobRoy, the front fork or the rear stays? My current cross bike has tight clearances as cx frames goes, and the hybrid fenders fit in fine.

yes

I don't have the frame yet. Still waiting like you. My comment about the fenders came mostly from looking at them, and my experience with a Surly Pacer, which advertises 28c with fender or 32 without. The spec. on the Rob Roy isn't all that different (3mm or so).
I did look up lots of posts regarding tire clearance, b/c I wanted more. There were one or two posts by people who fit tires bigger than 35c. I have a steel fork that can take a 1.8" tire, so I may use that if it works geometry wise.

shapelike

Hmm, there's a lot of people building their group buy bike up as a commuter (and I suppose I'll be using it for that during the week) but mine's still going to be a ss race bike at heart. It's a shame the season will be over by the time I see the frame but oh well, there's always kicking my ass on some local singletrack with it until next season.

cnickgo

Ok so slighty noob question... Is there anything against a Miche bb for cross purposes? I bought one for a fixed gear project but found out I didn't want to mess with trying to get the fixed cup out (it's seized and has already caused enough cussing).

Psydotek

Probably no problem, are the Miche hubs sealed though?
