I'm heading up to San Francisco next month for a weekend and was wondering if there is any groups out there that puts on a weekly group ride. It'll be nice to ride with a few locals while I'm out there.

thanks

Which weekend? I'm doing a BF ride on 10/13, and I think taxi777 is doing a Mt. Tam ride at the end of the month. PM me and we'll hook up. Haven't ridden with you since Tour of SB II. Would be great to hook up with you again.

Does the ride need to be out of SF or will something down the peninsula work? What kind of pace and distance are you looking for?

Not to hijack the thread but I'm also heading to the area (San Jose) and would like to get out and ride. My wife and I will be there from Oct. 6th to the 13th. Could you recommend a good place to rent bikes and maybe a route or two that would take us out toward the coast? If I can get away I'm up for climbing or a faster pace (22-24 mph) but with the wife it will be a more social pace.

One of the nicest and rides to the Coast is the Coastal Classic.

From anywhere along Foothill Expresway, head toward Page Mill Rd.

Go westbound on Page Mill,
bear right on Old Page Mill Rd.,
continue straight on Page Mill Rd,
right on Arastradero,
left on Alpine,
right on Portola,
left on Old La Honda,
right on Skyline at the top to Skylonda at the intersection of Skyline and Hwy 84. (water available at a tap outside at the store on the NW corner of the intersection),
west on 84 to San Gregorio (anther little store with water/food, etc. Take off your biking shoes, please),
right on Stage,
right on Hwy 1,
right at the bottom of the hill just after you cross the bridge,
climb Tunitas Creek Rd for an hour or so,
descend Kings Mountain Rd.,
left on Hwy 84 (stop at Roberts Market for water. They have a tap outside.),
proceed through the stop sign at Canada/Mountain Home Rd.,
right on Whiskey Hiil Rd.,
left on Sand Hill,
right on Santa Cruz Avenue,
immediate left at the next light onto Junipero Serra (becomes Foothill Expressway)

It's about 60 miles if you start in Los Altos.

I like this ride better than than SteveE's route. Same start location (corner of Page Mill & Foothill). This route is more scenic and varied with less traffic.

Go up Page Mill Road to Skyline (more fun than Old La Honda)
Down Alpine Road on the other side
Left on Pescadero Road (water at Sam McDonald Park)
Right on Stage Road (food in town of Pescadero and also at store in San Gregorio)
Right on Hwy 1 (briefly)
Right on Tunitas up to Skyline
Down Kings Mountain Road
Left on Woodside Rd (food and water in town of Woodside)
Right on Alameda back to the start.

Distance is about 65 miles starting at Page Mill & Foothill.

if you're in SF you could always Sart say the SF Zoo and do the Golden Gate bridge Paradise Loop route or maybe just ride the Marin Headlands area.

This sounds interesting, is there a map or route sheet somewhere? :)

ok here are two links to give ya an idea ... first link is the SF Zoo to GG bridge http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/san-francisco/256850910 . then sec. link is for the Paradise loop part http://www.pancake.org/node/83 . SF Zoo area has a lot of parking along the Great Hwy.

I've only done Paradise Loop once and that was earlier this spring with a friend leading the way.

We did our route starting at the Safeway on 48th Ave / Cabrillo St. <parking in that area is easy to find> also it's pretty close to my house :P . We just rode up Cabrillo St to 33rd ave ... 33rd ave over to Clement st. then shot up the hill to the Legion Of Honor Museum. From there we took El Camino Del mar St. to Lincoln Blvd along the ocean some just call it 25th ave to the Golden Gate Bridge and off to the Marin Side to do the Paradise loop.

Sorry for the sloppy typing and crappy grammar, it's late and my little monster/son has been sick all night he's had the hardest time getting any form of sleep.

The VeloGirls website has a routesheet for the Paradise Loop (they call it the Tiburon Loop) here (http://www.velogirls.com/resources/routedocs/tiburon_sportsbasement2.doc), starting from the Sports Basement parking lot in the Presidio.

They have lots of other SF to Marin routes (http://www.velogirls.com/resources/routes.php#north) as well.
