What's the difference between what the cyclist was doing and someone sitting on your car while parked?

Yeah, it's not all that cool to hold on to people's cars for balance.. sure they're not respecting you sometimes, but you still need to respect their property.

That one has been out for quite a while, but it's still hilarious. Good way to deal with a JAC.:roflmao::roflmao:
Too funny!
But please tell me cyclists don't actually do that.
I nearly fell over while stopped earlier today, and ended up having to do that to stop my fall.. Whoops.
Other than that, I avoid touching cars, as I prefer they don't touch me :)

I would have done the same. You DON'T rest your hand on a car at a stoplight. You clip out and put your damn foot down.
^ True, but a month ago i was carrying a wheel i bought attached to my backpack, and getting off and on the seat was really uncomfortable. At one intersection i leaned and held to a van, hopefully the driver didn't mind.

Get a nice new car, and you don't want anyone touching it. With the car I drive, I would think that was odd, but wouldn't bother me in the least.

Resting yourself against a car is a no no in my books but I feel that rapping on the ones that comes to close is perfectly fine.

That cracked me up. I don't even let people lean against my car -- the black paint shows every little scratch they put on it (rivets on jeans, especially).

yup my bro screamed at the guy and after it was all said and done he told to the guy to hand over the wheels or get his ass kicked it cost my bro around 600 bucks to fix the scratch the roadie left on the fender

Thought I'd add that I've seen drivers call out to cyclists at a light "Hey, lean on the car if you want. I don't mind" THEN, it's OK, and I'd do it myself.

Please tell me you don't lean on random cars. Either way, even if you can trackstand forever it sends the message that you are stopped if you put a foot down. In abrupt stop and go traffic, I can see it being inconvenient, maybe, but when is anything convenient?

I don't lean on cars. Unless you count crashing into them when they cut me off.
I just prefer not to clip out, and since there is no law requiring it, I'm not going to.
<----- Sometimes I lean on cars (see avatar), but only when riding that thing... I usually try to lean on busses, UPS trucks, work vans and beat up pick ups. On regular bikes I trackstand or unclip depending on my mood.

No, if I was cut off (Hasn't happened yet) I'd be causing some damage too.
As long as they know you're stopped, you're good.

HAHAHA that was great, i'm totally cramming the truck into reverse next time a cyclist tries that.....LMAO!!! :D:D:D:D
nice restored truck with custom paint - $50,000
cost to repair scratches from cyclist touching/leanign on hood of truck - $600
shifting truck into reverse and laughing as arsehole cyclist falls down = PRICELE$$
reversing at an intersection is STUPID dangerous in a car. especially quickly without warning.
funny commercial but it shows the worst aspects of cyclists and drivers.

You'd better put your truck into a glass dome then, because I scuff cars all the time when filtering/lane splitting. Don't take it one the road if it is that precious to you.

I am amazed that bikers have this attitude.
Am I the only biker that bumps, scratches, scuffs, slides past, and grabs mirrors of cars? I don't mean occasionally, I mean daily.

The driver behaves as if his personal property, remaining undamaged, is more important than the physical safety of another person who is not harming it.
I can see why many people would enjoy this commercial, it reinforces antisocial behaviour and justifies an unsafe attitude on a public thoroughfare. The driver reacts in an unpredictable manner, resulting in possible injury to the individual who did him no harm whatsoever, and places the individual in a prone position in front of the vehicle.
It entirely supports the notion that autocentric societies have pushed for years, cars are more important than people, and should be defended even from a perceived, not actual harm, by causing injury to another person.
yeah, great commercial

Of course, it's also "antisocial" to just ride up to a car and put your hands on it without asking the owner if it's alright.
The cyclist was, on purpose, the stereotypical "roadie" at its worst -- bright, skin-tight outfit, fancy bike, and such self-importance that nobody else seems to matter.
That's why it's so damn funny to see him fall over. ;)

Or a person doesn't have to be "serious" to find social commentary in a particular media? Sorry I stepped on your dick there fella, didn't realize criticizing antisocial autocentric behaviour in an offhand manner was a criticism of you.You suck, I'm just baiting you, your highlight of one line for commentary while ignoring the remaining content is a good sign that you suck in general lol!

Or "antisocial bikecentric behaviour"...
That justifies intentional unsafe behaviour? Hardly. Lots of people don't believe bikes should be on the road, should they be allowed to bump them off the road, or drive erratically to discourage them? Touching a car is in no manner a violation of property or person, but we're allowed to defend a harmless self perceived slight with unsafe behaviour behind the wheel? A lot of people here think so.

That's a damn shame. Having had a few custom paintjobs myself, I'd say you got hosed, and hosed badly to have paid someone for a paintjob that can be harmed by a human hand enclosed in a padded nylon glove.
Next time check with the BBB or something before handing off a classic truck to a hack.

Next time, keep your hands off the damn car.
It's a personal space; it would be like somebody coming up and putting their hand on your back. That would make you feel pretty uncomfortable, wouldn't it?
And, yes, the self-righteous, smug, indifferent biker in the commercial deserved that prank.
BarracksSi
10-03-07, 11:47 AM
So, if you walked up to your parked bike and found someone leaning against it, how would you feel? Would you be okay with it because they're only touching it? Or would you go, "Hey, get off of my bike!"
I take it that you don't care if you find a stranger leaning on your car, right? I don't know how they do it in Toronto (since I guess we're now making assumptions about each other's personalities), but around here, that's a threatening posture. Nobody just leans on someone else's car unless they're either 1) good friends, 2) want to steal it, or 3) want to start a fight.

So, if you walked up to your parked bike and found someone leaning against it,.
If they were in my garage with my bike, I'd then shoot them.
In public though it is a differenet matter. I'd say MOVE.
wow.
the '******s' comment was absolutely ridiculous. if he's serious, he's not worth responding to.
barrackssi, you're wrong on a few key points.
it's not 'personal space' it's personal property, which is a very different kind of personal. this is legally true as well as ethically. it has nothing to do with someone putting their hands on your body.
second, the biker in that video was a character, what he 'deserved' is ENTIRELY a fiction created solely by the people who made that video and arguably the social and ideological influences that made them who they are.
and lastly, leaning against a car and leaning against a bike are very different things. regardless, i don't believe that 'around there' every single person only leans on a vehicle if they have one of those three reasons. some people just lean on things and don't think twice about it.
with a car, you just click the remote and judge their reaction to your flashing lights/beeping/horn chirp. with a bike, a simple "yo" usually gets people to move. sometimes they're trying to jack you but most of the time they're just looking to rest their legs.

.
It is not personal space. It takes up a whole lot of public space. Wholey different than putting your hands onto a person's body.
If you have a car and you are so uptight that you don't want it touched, keep it at home. Cars on the road get touched, scuffed, scratched, hit with rocks, cans, birds, and all other manner of road debris. That's the facts. I your car is stopped in the middle of a lane at a light, I won't give any thought to sliding past it on my way to the front of the line. Alot different than a car sliding past a slower moving bike because you can't hit a bike without endangering the life of the rider. You can bounce down the side of a Porsche just fine without endangering the driver.
BarracksSi

I don't think I'm wrong, and I'm going to fight it.
People don't have a lot of space they can call their own once they get outside of the house. Lots of car owners -- especially those who actually enjoy cars -- see them as extensions of themselves. Legally, sure, the line is drawn at simple "property", but you can't be serious when you say that someone purposely messing with your car is fine & dandy.
Yes, the biker in the video was a character, and I thought I made my opinion clear about how he was portrayed. Funny, though, that some of you are behaving just like him -- "**** your car, I'm on my bike". I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you're offended by the commercial.
Who leans against someone else's bike? "Rest their legs"? Are you kidding me? Bikes aren't benches or walls or café tables. They're someone's personal transportation -- maybe even their livelihood. You don't do that to some stranger's bike while it's locked on a rack, do you?

And those are all accidental bits of damage. That's a lot different than somebody choosing to mess with your stuff. Bumping into someone in a crowded bar is no big deal, but bumping into them when nobody else is around can turn into an altercation. Try it someday.

Scrape up my car, and I will hunt you down and make you pay for the paint job. I love my car (and my bikes) as much as you love your own bike. If you can't respect that, you've got no business asking for respect from others.

You've got it almost right. You don't go into a crowed bar and not expect to get bumped. And you shouldn't go out onto crowded streets and expect not to get bumped. I do not purposely bump, and scrape cars, but the roads are crowded.
