I asked this from bodybuilders and I thought I'll get some input from you guys,

Hi

Im new here. A little about myself--I basically alternate days where I do cardio and days where I do simple body weight excercises(pushups, pullups, chinups).

At the moment, I have a pretty lean and semi muscular figure. I started doing the "weights" because I was losing muscle mass through the cardio, and so far have been getting pretty decent results.

Now the reason I joined is to ask about my diet. For my running/cycling friends, they mostly stick to their high carb/moderate-moderate high protein/low fat diet, and from what I know of bodybuilders they focus more on a high protein/moderate amounts of good fats/low carb diets.

I get a pretty good amount of protein in my diet, close to probably .8g per pound(I tried eating 1g per pound but felt like it was a bit too much for me). Also, I try to eat pretty healthy but I do eat a lot. Aside from the high protein portion of the diet, should I try to incorporate more healthy fats into my diet or just stick with my current diet now of more complex carb-based but lower fat diet? Ive gotten used to a low fat diet and when I snack I usually crave foods rich in carbs(wheat breads, cereal, fruits, bagels). What is the most significant reason for incorporating more fats rather than more carbs into a diet? Any reasons to change?

For my purposes I just want to keep a decent amount of lean muscle mass on me while doing my cardio. Is the high protein/higher carb/low fat diet good for me?

BTW, Im not including vegetables in the carbs portion, which I try to eat alot of but I dont think the carbs from most vegetables is too significant. I eat vegetables but only on the sides though to the main course. My biggest concern is why choose healthy fats over the good carbs for my situation? Whats so bad about the carbs ? I know a lot of bodybuilding opt for a higher fat diet and try to avoid carbs like the plague and I would like to know why. Since Im not really bodybuilding in the sense of packing a lot of muscles but more like conditioning I am wondering which side to pick.

Typical bodybuilding is 50/25/25 PCF combinations. I wouldn't go that low on carbs if you're doing any significant cardio, so maybe a 40/30/30 might be better. I personally run a 15/65/20 on a typical day.

Well, even good carbs (whole wheat etc.) can tend to not leave you that full, which means you may eat more than you want. Good fats will make you feel fuller and moderate your blood sugar.

If you've been losing muscle during cardio, you might want to make sure you do well in recovery nutrition - if you work out hard your body will tear down your muscles to replace muscle glycogen. Getting some carb and protein very soon after your cardio workout will help on this (though it depends on how long/hard you're working out...)
