Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

good morning
I'm glad I didn't spend my day on bikeforums today :) New job pwns
ARGH!
That's all I have to say about my research today. Happily, it's more than balanced out by relatively good progress recently.

I was thinking the other day, and maybe a few of you might agree with me. I think the TDF should be altered for next year. Only one rule: The bike must be a single speed beach cruiser, bone stock. Tell that wouldn't be totally freakin' awsome! Huh, huh, anyone...eh? Or not.
haha, reminds me of when I played golf a lot. I always thought KMart should sponsor a tournament where all the pros used the cheap-o Kmart golf clubs. They'd still beat par, just as the pro cyclists on beach cruisers would average speeds I can't fathom on my road bike. It'd be fun to watch.

Dang, putting the Niterider headlamp on the helmet mount really gets heavy. I don't see how people can stand having such a head heavy lamp. Do any other NiteRider users use the helmet mount? It would give me serious neckaches!!!!

I don't know if I can hit 20mph on a beach cruiser.
I would prefer having my own personal road sweeper. I don't need it to motorpace me, but if it could give me about 1/4 mile clearance and get rid of the sand, I'd be satisfied. :p
(Mind you, it's not me that's complaining, it's Sacha)

cyclecross bike maybe?
I've thought about it! Some of my local buddies have been urging me to do so, since so many of the cyclocross events are in PV and Torrance. But they've been urging me to try out the velodrome, too. Then, of course, I've been kinda itching for a TT bike. So many bikes!!! Too little money!!!

Disc brakes are not allowed under UCI CX rules, but strangely some bikes like the Lemond Poprad come with them.

Ladies only track sessions: a low cost, low stress intro to the track for people without Y chromosomes. Next session is Oct 13. http://lavelodrome.org/Events/LadiesDay/LadiesDay.htm Bikes are supplied, and there are even a few really small ones.
It gets you certified so you can attend any of the regular training sessions that aren't tagged elite-only.
FWIW, two of the top US track racers right now, Neva Day and Christen King are former triathletes who were converted to track after they started riding it either to improve their cycling or due to injuries.
To my amazement this morning, my brother and my sister in-law are on the cover of the OC Register. There will be an article on their chance meeting at a bookstore in Irvine and the "true love" that came from it in the "Life" section of the paper tomorrow.
Very strange to open up the paper and see your brother and sister in law on the cover of the paper!

Bitingduck,
I am interested in this Velodrome thing because I have never seen one been to one or know anything about it. If I would to go down there, just to look around, what day would you recommend? I am not interested in actually jumping on the track, at least not this first time there.

If you want to see the structured training, tues/thu 7-9 pm
If you want to see open track, one of the open sessions during the week (check the schedule in my sig) or Sunday from noon to three. The sunday sessions are pretty low key and if you give me some warning I could meet you there.
I highly recommend the Ladies on Track sessions. I try to show up and help turn wrenches when I don't have other stuff going on-- there are sometimes a lot of bikes to set up (pedals, saddle height, pump tires, etc). The sessions are pretty well organized and get you a safe intro-- you're totally capable of riding one.
If you want to watch some racing, the last sanctioned race of the year is Oct 20, as part of the LA/Encino 2-day madison. There will also be practice races on saturdays for the rest of the year.
