Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thanks, Frank. That's lovely. :)
It's San Clemente Island.
Nice pic, Frank! Now I'm mad that I didn't take the time to look out my window at sunset.
Hey for those that care and for those that don't give a damn I decided not to sign up for either the Wildflower Century or the BA ride. I will be coming out to SoCal, San Diego, around the 15th of April through following weekend. Jason has offered to get me out on a ride or two and hopefully I will get to meet some of youse guys then. Hopefully Aprilm will also be out around that time and we can all have a grand time. I expect Ovoleg is in the don't give a damn camp.
I'm thinking we can do the Baldy ride (Encanto to Baldy village and back, optional ski lift out and back for an additional 2200 ft in 4.6 miles each way) on the Saturday of the weekend you're out here. That's always a popular ride. And then some sort of coastal ride, probably similar to the one aprilm rode out here, on Sunday. Should be lots of fun. Pencil it in, people, and we'll get details worked out later. Maybe if we plan far enough in advance, we can convince a few other BikeForums people to visit at the same time and have a big BikeForums party.
Just your shoulders? Sometimes tight pecs are the cause of all that upper back soreness. ;)
Who said just the shoulders? That's just a starting point.

Really? Which two were those?
90%,
In bad weather, you should make your car easier for others to see by: I said to put on the parking lights (should be headlights)
When you approach a traffic signal displaying a steady yellow light, you must: I said to slow down and proceed with caution (should be stop if safe)...
Those are debatable answers to me...

Phil, the steady (as opposed to blinking) yellow light is the one that precedes a red. It is always stop if safe. That is the purpose of it, to make safe stops.
Are you saying just the parking lights make it easier for people to see you than headlights?

A solid yellow light is not indicative that the light is always going to turn red. A solid yellow light is a solid yellow light, meaning that you slow down and proceed with caution. If the light turns red, you now have time to stop since you slowed down.
In light rain (which is BAD weather in SoCal), parking lights are sufficient for increasing your visibility to other vehicles.

I gotta take my training to the next step this month in efforts to cram it all in before the first race. I'm still debating if i need a 11-23 cassette.....

100% Do I get a prize? :D
When I left my parents' place last week, my mom sent me back to SD with a boatload of fruit. Okay, not quite a boatload. Only 15 pounds of Mandarin oranges, a pound of blueberries, and some raspberries. Evidently, she bought all those oranges realizing that there wasn't enough room in the refrigerator at home, so it all sat out at room temperature for a few days. And then it sat in the car some more as we went out to dinner before I drove off.
I didn't realize it had been at room temperature for several days, but it explains why they're rotting so quickly. I've been on a fruit-eating binge to get through as many of the oranges as possible as quickly as possible. I've gotten through about 9 pounds of it so far, having to chuck out about 20% of them. A lower percentage initially, but the percentage is slowly rising.
It's a good thing vitamin C is water soluble and that oranges really aren't all that high in calories.

I really don't think you need an 11-23 for crits. as long as your comfortable spinning around 100 you should be fine with what you have. Your crank is standard 53x39 right?

I just think it would be easier for me to get to top speed with more power vs alot more RPM
In light rain (which is BAD weather in SoCal), parking lights are sufficient for increasing your visibility to other vehicles.
Except that the law now in California is that you MUST have your headlights on if your windshield wipers are in use. This was a new law for California ac ouple years back, though I saw the same thing in Florida over 20 years ago.
Edit: To quote the CA Vehicle Code:
Headlamps on Motor Vehicles
24400. (a) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be:
(1) ( )1 Equipped with at least two ( )2 headlamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, and, except as to vehicles registered prior to January 1, 1930, they shall be located directly above or in advance of the front axle of the vehicle. The headlamps and every light source in any headlamp unit shall be located at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 22 inches.
(2) Operated during darkness, or inclement weather, or both, with at least two lighted headlamps that comply with paragraph (1).
(b) As used in paragraph (2) of subdivision (a), “inclement weather” is a weather condition that is either of the following:
(1) A condition that prevents a driver of a motor vehicle from clearly discerning a person or another motor vehicle on the highway from a distance of 1,000 feet.
(2) A condition requiring the windshield wipers to be in continuous use due to rain, mist, snow, fog, or other precipitation or atmospheric moisture.( )3
Added Sec. 2, Ch. 415, Stats. 2004. Effectve January 1, 2005. Operative July 1, 2005.
Amended Sec. 9, Ch. 311, Stats. 2006. Effective January 1, 2007.
The 2006 amendment added the italicized material, and at the point(s) indicated, deleted the following:
“During darkness and inclement weather, a motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be equipped”
“lighted”
“(c) This section shall become operative on July 1, 2005.

So i'm in a bit of dilema today... Today and tomorrow are my chances to reverse blood dope, er, donate blood here at work. However, i did bike commute today. I can catch a ride home with my girlfriend if i donate today or wait until tomorrow (i'll be driving in) and get my bike ride home. Either way, i'll probably be unable to get on the bike for at least a week (1 pint is a lot of blood when you weigh as much/little as me) and it usually takes 2 or 3 weeks before i feel normal again...

Unless you've got a lot of downhill or a downhill sprint, there's no need for an 11 in crits. Even as a strong rider on the flats, unless you can sprint over 40mph or sustain yourself over 30mph in the flats, there's no need for it. You're better off with a 12/23 or 12/21, as you have better range of gears that you will use.

Hi,
Unfortunately, Campy doesn't make a 12-21 or I'd own it. :( I use an 11-21 in crits and every once in a while I hit the 11 by when I try dumping multiple gears. My skinny legs can't push an 11 except downhill with a tailwind. :o
BTW, I use a 52 on the front because it's slightly less ridiculous than a 53 X 11 for me. Anyone need a brand new 53T Campy Record front chainring?
For now Jeff, just run what ya brung until you start getting used to this game.
