Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sure isn't fair, now is it, Cuda? April comes to town, and she gets a ride PLANNED for her ;) But you come knocking and we just won't answer! In all seriousness, because that weekend is Thanksgiving, I think most folks are tying to figure out family plans. I will be in town, however, and I'll try to figure out some sort of ride. Also, I'm sure details for the Pie Ride will materialize soon. :)

Pie is probably going to be too long for me, and likely I'll be on the wrong side of LA anyways. Though there has been talk of maybe taking a couple day trip with my inlaws that week, and one possible destination is San Diego. Maybe I'll meet you at the Pie stop and ride back with you! That would require my loving wife to do a fair bit of driving though. We'll see how my plans end up and how much riding I'll get done between now and then. Right now I'm thinking I may still have stitches in my head till about Nov. 1st or so.

I understand that a lot of people's plans are still in the planning stage for that week. We are a fair ways out still and I'm sure lots of people will be traveling. Which is why I was thinking of trying to get a get-together planned for the weekend before thanksgiving before too many people skip town. :)

I'll update my thread as plans start to solidify, and be around to see what plans are getting put together for that week.

If your ride plan is in San Diego, you can forget about M.E. She's a no show for SD rides.

As for me, my parents will be here from Toronto, so I think I'll be with them. :)

Hey! Don't you start that. Besides Dan and Tracie have agreed to let me stay with a private chef and massuese at their place for future rides in San Diego. The only rule is that the chef and the massuese have to leave quietly in the morning so as not to wake them or the neighbors. :p

nah...the Board meeting is next week. My boss is traveling, so we have to over revisions on the meeting materials and book (presentations basically). I'm the lucky person who prepares all of that.

...Crazy....after taking last week off of BF'ing, I got all caught up (and ahead) at work...I officially have zilch to do...and my boss actually said, "Well, I guess you could clean up your desk or something."

Weird.

On a sad note, my 10 year old 2nd cousin whacked a tree on his bike yesterday. He is my cousin's kid, and they live about a block away from me. Bike is okay, I think. He, on the other hand, has a fractured jaw, is having surgery tonight at 5, will most likely have a plate put in and have his jaw wired shut for six weeks. Poor kiddo. I'm going to visit at lunchtime.

Sorry about your cousin. :( That sucks. But on the bright side, he's got bragging rights once his jaw heals. Kids heal fast, you know. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Someone needs to advertise for authentic Native-American moccasins. Preferable with turquoise accent beading. Oh, and a set of rust-proof channel lock pliers.

Just got back from the ER. Another edition of Indolent's Stupid Human Tricks. One the return leg of my morning ride I thought I heard something sticking to my front tire. I decided to brush it off with my glove as always, but this time I decided to reach down behind the fork rather than in front of the fork. Predictably enough when my hand made contact with the tire it was pushed into the back of the fork where the spokes proceeded to shred my right ring finger. Luckily enough I am left handed. Blood sprayed everywhere and little bits of I-don't-want-to-know were left sticking to the bike. Once again, luckily enough the blood went quite well with the black/red color scheme of the Look. I didn't go down. I stopped, wrapped my hand in my white optik vest and called Tracie to pick me up. The final damages include 12 stitches, a finger splint and a small fracture.

In weak defense of my stupidity, the reaching behind the wheel thing was not my own idea. One of the SDBC ride leaders showed everyone how to brush debris off a front wheel by the same method. Of course he reached down far behind the fork where this kind of thing would never happen, but I choose to blame him anyway.

Ouch. And don't do it with bare hands either-- if there's a piece of glass in the tire you can get a nice slice (I haven't done this, but I've heard of it and think about it because I usually ride without gloves).

And when doing the rear wheel, hook your thumb around the chainstay so your hand doesn't slip down into the narrow part of the gap behind the seat tube.

...sorry, but that was damn funny. Y'see, ladies, Men are allowed to laugh at other men when they injure themselves. It's like stepping on a rake and having it fly up and smash you in the face. Sure it hurts, but it's super funny if anybody is watching you.

And, chicks dig scars, so all men are secretly envious of other men who get injured, 'cause they get to play the sympathy card and the 'check out my bad-ass scar' card for the rest of their lives.

No, no. Mo' is perfectly correct of course. It's entirely OK for men to laugh at other men's injuries. It's also very easy and safe. If Mo' was really hardcore he would laugh at women's injuries too. That would be impressive, but I know he can't do it.

No, no, you're missing the point. You're from the slow class aren't you? While somewhat less common, it is still OK for women to laugh at men's injuries. What would get everyone's attention is if a man were to laugh a women's injuries as I challenged Mo' to do. To do so would require overcoming millions of years of genetic programming and thousands of years of charm school training and/or the guy would have to be a complete worm.
