Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

eeeehhhwwww I hate that first hill!!!! Never done those other climbs, are those on that old twisty road on the left as you're climbing up to the interection?
Yes?
I'll toporoute about what I did yesterday. Then you can laugh.

Because my ass and lower back hurt...and not in a good way. And Mateo has yet to hook me up with that Cornbread stuffing recipe. And Jeff called me a wuss. And ME is sad. And the holidays are upon us, which is a bittersweet time for me. And you called me weak....and I can lash out at anybody, 'cause it's the internets and the tubes allow it.
I emailed it to you this morning, Mo.

Well, ya see, that hill is about 15 miles from my house. So to get there and back would be more than I did yesterday...so no. I haven't done it yet.
Here's the hills I do as my workout. Any variation of this general route works.

I got bonus points yesturday playing sweeper as I was the first to the fork, went back down about 3 miles then back up + we went to the observatory which is about another 1100ft of climbing round trip;)
I decended the south grade passed two cars, and in less then 10 minutes to the fork:p Average corner speed was about 36-37mph and sprinted off the exits to about 42-44. The new bike handles better and more smooth then my last bike:D

I stopped using toporoute because large route crash it. Bikely.com finally upgraded to auto mapping like toporoute and shows total climbing gain and such.

Actually I had a case of 'screaming taint' by then. Saddle position was fine for sitting up on climbs, but for spinning on flats, it was like balancing on an axe blade.

Thanks Jim, but I still couldn't wake up in time. :p
Just came back from a short 15 miles ride with my bro-in-law and a Torrey Pines repeat. Wasn't feeling that great, but started to feel better on the second climb up TP. Very foggy today though.
Also tried out my bro-in-law's rental Cervelo soloist. It feels pretty good; seems to be more comfy/less vibrations than my C'dale.

Take a week or two completely off the bike. The "problem" with SoCal is that you can ride outside as much as you want year round, and if you take advantage of that it's easy to burn out. Most people I know who ride a lot have some time of year when they reduce their mileage by a lot, and put other things ahead of riding.
.
Good advice except I have a fear of losing my fitness level on a bike. I work out at the gym (tonight I'm lifting weights and a spin class), but it isn't the same. So, it's hard to take two weeks off! :(

Dave did you ride the aluminum one?...i was thinking of buying one for a crit bike....Yeah. I only did a short ride with it though. 15 miles on my C'dale caad8 followed right after a parking lot spin on the aluminum soloist (a little smaller sized for me).
My power output is quite pathetic, so you should definitely try it out yourself. All I can say is that steering response is quite similar to my C'dale and more comfy over bumps/cracks on the road. I don't really know how to gauge stiffness, etc.
Nytro in Escinitas rents them out for $45 a day.

I haven't seen "Mr. Creaky-Calfee," "Speedy Whiteshorts" or "Tattooed Zipp Guy" lately so my Hot Guy Count has been low. No visits to fire stations, either. I thought about feigning a fainting spell prior to the last Donut Ride, but knowing those guys they'd just strip Sacha for her Campy parts and ride away as fast as they can.

Thanks for offering. To be a successful Tour de Whiners the ride needs to meet a few important criteria:
1. It has to start in a "compromise" location that no one is happy with.
2. It has to be too long for noobs and too short for century-hounds.
3. It should be be flat enough to look wimpy to climbing junkies but have a few really nasty medium length climbs - backloaded of course - to induce maximum whinage.
4. The rest stops should be unevenly spaced and too long.
5. The pace should be too fast.
EDIT:
6. The route slip should be wrong.

7. only one bathroom at the stops so that we have to wait in line
8. Only stops at crappy donut shops so that those who want better food will whine and those who love donuts will whine at the poor donut quality
9. The route may only be on bike paths and very heavily trafficked roads
I'd say we've just about gotten it planned. Do you wish to start the thread? :D
About to go out scouting LBS's in the valley to find a shop to rent a bike from for Saturday's ride while I'm out here. (see new thread in SoCal for the details).

MDR. People started from different parking lots, different cities, even in the Valley.

50 miles. Check.
3. It should be be flat enough to look wimpy to climbing junkies but have a few really nasty medium length climbs - backloaded of course - to induce maximum whinage.
3000 feet. Ganado. Again, check.
4. The rest stops should be unevenly spaced and too long.
We lost quite a few. Herb?
5. The pace should be too fast.
