Please tell us about your rent increase. How much did it go up?
merider1

Not much-- that's why it's called an appendix.
There are theories as to why it might be useful still, but not even close to confirmed.
Well, I think mine has run out of uses. :( I've been having phantom adominal pain for months along with bouts of bloating and other symptoms. Recently, and at night in particular (??), I'm waking up with sharp pains in my lower right side (no, it doesn't feel menstrual in the least). I'm nervous that I might have a chronic inflamed appendix.
So, I figure that if that is the case, then I should at least try to sell it on the black market if it turns out that it needs to be removed.:p

It went up 5%. I'm trying to determine if it should have only been increased 4% per Rent Control laws. Sherman Oaks is in Los Angeles County and my unit (built before 1978) should be under RC. The guy who owns it is a number one jerk. His parents owned it when I moved in Oct of 2000 and they were wonderful. Now, the place receives almost zero maintenance and he is so rude to the tenants. If I only need to pay a 4% increase, that is all I want to pay (clearly).

Well, I can't decide which is worst -
Craig's List, which has serial killers on it looking for victims; or
Ebay, which has serial bidders on it who ruin it for the common folk.

Celiac sprue?
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/
Hmmm. Well, here are the symptoms:
gas - check
recurring abdominal bloating and pain - check
chronic diarrhea - NO
constipation - NO
pale, foul-smelling, or fatty stool - Haven't smelled it lately, so couldnt' tell ya
weight loss/weight gain - Are you calling me fat?
fatigue - check
unexplained anemia (a low count of red blood cells causing fatigue) - no, had my blood taken two months ago and it's just fine
bone or joint pain - Not that I'm aware of
osteoporosis, osteopenia - doubtful
behavioral changes - DEFINITELY, I've been a major b*tch lately
tingling numbness in the legs (from nerve damage) - Yes! In my feet. But I wonder if that was due to my crappy Shimano cycling shoes
muscle cramps - NO
seizures - NO
missed menstrual periods (often because of excessive weight loss) - I don't get periods but I know the reason for that already
infertility, recurrent miscarriage - Sigh...insufficient data to answer
delayed growth - Emotionally? Probably.
failure to thrive in infants - I thrived, damnit, and don't think I didn't
pale sores inside the mouth, called aphthous ulcers - NO
tooth discoloration or loss of enamel - NO, but I could use a good teeth bleaching due to all the coffee I drink
itchy skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis - NO, no rashes that I'm aware of or am willing to discuss - although I did have that creepy heat rash a few months ago.
I don't think this is the cause, but thanks for the link. :)

I think there was some sort of local government increase that landlords were allowed to pass through to their tenants, if I remember correctly. If the place isn't up to your standards and/or the guy is a jerk,
take this opportunity to give him the bird and move.
Why would you want a Jerk to make a living off you?

It didn't, but that makes sense since you lived so close to me. I'm sure we fell under the same ordinance. Oh well, I'm only paying $824 now and for a one bedroom in Sherman Oaks, I really can't complain.

Yeah, rents are ridiculous. This is why I'm not looking around. Eventually, if he keeps uping it each year, I will move. At some point, if I'm paying market, I might as well live in a newer apartment with more amenities than this one has. But for now, it's a great location and I'm happy.

When I moved out, I was paying $1040 or so. He was going to raise it to $1350 for the next tenants. Downside of rent control is that you can get sticker shock when you do eventually move.
My new place is a LOT more than my old one, but it's bigger, nicer and the gasoline savings from my "non-commute" make up a lot of the difference. Not to mention the salvation of what little sanity I have by not sitting in trafffic over an hour a day.

Joel, I've got to ask this, but what route were you taking to get to work that you sat in traffic for an hour each day from Sherman Oaks to Glendale (closer than my office)?
I got to Glendale this morning in rush hour traffic in 20 minutes. Usually, unless there is an accident on the freeway, I get home in 30 in the worst traffic. If the freeway is jammed, I just pop off and take surface streets. If I go to the gym in the morning or evening (which I do most days), it takes me 7 minutes to get to Glendale at 5:00am and at night no more than 20 to get home after 7pm (and that's with traffic - otherwise, no more than 15 minutes). It's 12 miles from SO to Glendale.
Is your office located up Angeles Crest past Red Box or something? :p

Nah, just been commuting that route for almost 5 years. My sensor is just that I know when to pop off the FWY when I need to. Every once in awhile I get trapped, but not too often. I was just curious, since our commutes used to be similar.

You do realize that 12 miles in 7 minutes is driving 103 miles per hour, and that assumes no slowing down for any stop signs, lights, turns or maneuvering out of a parking spot? :p

Well, she could average 103mph and still make it in 7 minutes. So all she'd need to do is go faster for some part of the trip to account for stop signs, etc.
