Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thanks Dave and Chris. Ok, then what's the difference if I simply use the headphone jack on my laptop to connect to my stereo receiver? Is there a diff in signal quality?

I'm no expert, so this is just based on my limited experience.
They're supposed to pick up less noise than within your laptop, and the more expensive ones have better d/a converters.
Do you notice any extra noise in the audio when the hard disk is being accessed/mouse moving/during massive screen redraws? If not, the former doesn't apply.
For the latter, you can try playing a CD direct through your cd player->stereo receiver, and the same through your computer->stereo receiver. Don't forget to adjust your computer's output level properly though (mine is set to around 60-70% of max).

What I'm doing is playing internet radio over my shop's music system. Actually, the sound quality is decent using the laptop's headphone jack terminal. Perhaps I should just stick to that.

Yeah. Unless your laptop sound card picks up weird computer noises when you're using it, I think any sound quality improvements will be masked out by the ambient noise.

It depends...
If you have a decently designed headphone out and get the output level set right for your stereo inputs it can be fine. It's also possible to send a high enough signal out the headphone out to distort a lot at the inputs to your stereo.
For what you're doing, as long as you aren't getting a lot of buzzing from a bad cable ground or something, and aren't hammering the inputs to the stereo, it probably won't matter much. Some of the USB ones could actually be worse if the connector grounding is done badly.

nah stay home and ride your bike, since its gonna be pour rain tonight!!!!
I'm getting a lunch ride in today. Test out my rear rim. It took about 30 minute to tru the damn thing last night. Half the rim was bent about 3/16" out left, the another 1/16 off to the right. All jacked up. I was getting frustrated while doing it. Wife came and looked to see what I was doing and when I spun the tire and it went to a dead stop from the brake pad, she said "training resistance?" LOL Anyhow, it's about as straight as I can get it. It still off about 1/16 to the left.

Good news: I earned my "hit by car" merit badge this morning! And Scootcore got to witness it in all its glory. What score would you give the dismount and landing, Scoot? She was turning right into a parking lot and never saw me (even though she had just passed me about 3 seconds earlier).
Amazingly, the bike seems okay, except for a little front wheel wobble. My shoulder and hip are bruised pretty good, couple gouges along my spine, and minor road rash on one knee. Funny enough, the worst part is going to be my blackened thumb nail, which hurts like a *****. All in all, very fortunate. :)

I put 6000 miles on my road bike chain before I switched it, but the MTB has 11000 on it without a chain or cassette replacement... then some punk at my apartment decided to try and break my chain with a screwdriver.... so now I am going to have to buy a new one

Glad you're mostly OK, but you're wrong about your bike. It's NOT okay. Even though it looks fine it may have sustained significant hidden damage. If you continue to ride it you could experience catastrophic frame failure during a high speed descent. You totally need a new bike right away.
BTW, moisture tends to protect frames from such failures so it's OK to keep your current bike as a rain bike.

I think my MTB needs a new chain....it's getting torn apart for a good cleaning soon...the slicks are going back on it for commuting, i am sick of tearing up the road bike commuting...besides, i never really go off road anywho.....actually...i should use my wifes wheels for the slicks and leave the meaty tires on my rims for off road!!!
i am too smart.

Thanks guys. ME, the driver was very apologetic and concerned. Which made it difficult to be too upset (once I realized everything was in working order). If she had taken the "you damn cyclists" attitude, I would have called the cops instantly. And if she had been on her cell phone when making that turn... well, *I* might be the one in jail right now. ;)
