Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Bombing down dirt at 30-40 m/h I have no problem. :D
On a mild downhill grade on a paved road, 30-40 m/h I have no prob.:)
Put me on a paved road with a steep grade and I get nervous after 25m/h. all I can think of is
the skinny little tires bowing out....
50+ on the Road.. I think I'd pee myself...
Those little tires just pop way too easily....
So looks like I need to do hill repeats to get used to the DH.
my play hill today is average grade of 9%, peaks to 11% on the way up. And only .9 miles long.
We can get to 50mph at about 1/4 down (coasting), tuck and hold, sit up and slam on the brakes at about 1/8 from the base where there is a 4 way stop sign (I've blown through that sign a few times)
You've riden enough with me to know that I tend to go balls to the wall on the DH, regardless if its on a
1ft wide single track or open road.

i rode again today:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/wahoolee/pt.jpg
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/wahoolee/bikepath.jpg
i haven't ridden in the last 4 months because i wanted to get back into a weight training mode and then incorporate the bike. i tried to do it the opposite way and i wouldn't go to the gym, i just wanted to ride.
as a result of my 3 month weight training and supplement intake experiment, i've put on 12 lbs of muscle. my leg workouts in the gym have paid off, also. i know, i'm doing a blistering 9mph in the picture above but having not ridden in 4 months, i can exponentially tell the difference in the power i have and can tap into now. my aerobic stamina isn't there because of no conditioning on the bike, but the power is evident. i am very pleased. :)
#1 oh, so you really do own a bike?
#2 reading the above about you packing on muscle and blistering your pace and tapping your power has left me dizzy and needing something cold...
...like a shower. :p
PS I'm very pleased too, in ways I'll not describe on this public forum :D

I generally swim 2000m when I feel decent/good. Generally no stopping, maybe once or twice for 5mins. If I feel fantastic I will swim 3000-4000m.
Then I do chest/biceps/shoulders one day. Back, triceps the next day. Abs everyday. 5 days a week
I'm a wimp in the pool, can only got 5 laps before having to stop for 1/2 min or so.

Sure is lots of man-love on the forum tonight.
Shhhhh! Happy, I want to encourage their team spirit and willingness to "take one for the team." You and I have many times, so it's good others are stepping up...or shall I say, "maning up."

Morning ya'll. I'm tired, my legs are sore, and i want to go back to bed...
There's nothing like having your calf muscle cramp up on the last 1/2 mile of a triathlon bike portion and having to pedal with one leg back into transition. :D
merider1
12-10-07, 08:17 AM
Morning, Henry. Ouch. See now, if you just gave up that silly triathlon stuff and only cycled, you wouln't have these issues. It's all that swimming before the riding that gets ya. :p

Actually, it was a reverse triathlon which is why i cramped on the bike. Usually i end up getting cramps on the run (where it's alot easier to stop and stretch). It's hard to stretch on a bike, espically when you're on the fixed gear bike...
The muscle loosened up just as i got back to the transition area and i was fine after that. It also was fun passing people while pedaling with one leg. :D

Just checking in to say hi. Still rather busy. And don't forget a few Planet Ultra rides are open for registration now. :)
I am physically thrashed from this weekend. My body is not used to doing construction activities anymore. I did manage to squeeze in an easy ride yesterday, but since my road bike is is in the shop, I had to take the tri bike out. I spent the first half of the ride realizing the seat was too high, and the second half realizing that my position is either too cramped or too low. Still, it was a perfect morning for a ride. We left Del Mar at 8:15, and while the roads were still a little sloppy from the rain, it was made up for by the very light traffic that was out on the road. Plus the air was brisk, but crystal clear. You could see for miles and miles, the ocean was a deep dark blue, and you could see the dusting of snow on the mountains out to the east. It was a perfect respite from the rest of a physically and mentally taxing weekend.

Chucklehead and I rode up Old Castle Rd and through Couser Cyn and Rice Cyn. It is beautiful out there - one of the most scenic routes in North SD County. This is part of both the Stone Brewing Ride and the SD 200KM Brevet.
Jason even made a new friend in Rainbow. A cute one.

Training has started for real, no more riding around Aimlessly 5 days a week. This morning was my second week of hill repeats, but today I had the added pleasure of strong headwinds. I should be ready for our long overdue ride (is that the same route that you and Frank did) in a couple more weeks.

same area, but different. i don't know if de luz has as much climbing as we did yesterday. it's pretty backwoods and windy roads, but there are a few good climbs in there. if you want we can do something with lotsa hills.
actually, the brewery ride is in a couple of weeks if you want to come down and do that. it's a good route, lots of climbing, and there will be some pretty fast folks. myself NOT included in the fast group.

Brewery ride would be cool, but I think we have about 1/2 a dozen Xmas parties that weekend:( I was thinking of one of the mornings Wed-Fri after Christmas? I haven't heard from Pico since he stood me up for a Mtn bike ride, back in October, I've been meaning to catch up with him. Hmm, maybe we can try to recruit Dave to come down for ride with you.
