Southern California - So Cal needs a long thread "What's Up?" type thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi SoCal.

Between yesterday and today, I ended up spending about six hours chasing down one reference for something I'm writing. Six hours! Since what I'm writing has about 80 references, you can see why I'm going crazy. :( Admittedly, most aren't this bad...

Bleh. I'm tired. I hope I'll be out there for the Burrito Century on Sunday. I definitely could use a long ride to destress, as long as I can survive the ride.

Oh, and I might have coffee with PFGS on Saturday morning. I don't drink coffee, but I have trouble saying no to that girl when she wants to hang out. Even if I might just be getting roped into chemistry help again. Though I doubt it this time since her exams end on Friday and she's flying out for winter break later on Saturday.

Anyway, back to looking up references...

Jason, if you would like us to write the paper for you, let us know. We can bang that out in an hour leaving you lots of time with PFGS

Thanks for the offer, but I've got only two references to go at this point. Besides, PFGS is busy studying for exams.

They don't make any sense to anyone anyway anyhoo, right?

Are 650 wheels really that much of a handicap? I know nothing about them, genuinely curious.

Even a lot of bikes with 650 wheels have horizontal TTs that are greater than 70cm standover.
Litespeed, for one.
I have slight hope for the Pinarello Surprise Pista. The web says it comes 44 sloping, but I haven't seen any helpful specs on it yet.

I didn't wrap my FSA flat-bar tops. But I did wrap my current round S-Works bar, and both are carbon.

Thanks.

I think I'll also change to cork tape. The Fizik tape I've been using wears out in 3-5 months above the hoods.

I don't know about white though. My hands get too grungy. Yesterday I managed to get grease stains on my jersey neck and on both sleeves of my baselayer.

all because of a chain drop at the bottom of couser(cruiser? cooster?).

I think that is the same as Pinarello Pista, but they don't show a 44, only a 46. The 46 has a 52 top tube.

If you have metal rings on your fingers, wouldn't it be easy to scratch up the carbon bars if you don't tape it all up? Will it become slippery if your palm gets wet, or cold in the morning?

Just from questions from the inexperienced. I have regular alloy bars on both bikes.

I don't know about the wet or cold either.

He's looking into whether they will be made available here.
He told me the Merckx also come in small sizes.

Rings = never wear them so wouldn't know

Slippery if wet = I've only used them gloveless on a climb, and I wasn't holding on to the bars tightly. No problems for me.

Cold in the morning = If its cold, I always wear gloves. Didn't notice any difference through them.

When did you start looking for a track bike? I think I missed that.

And how tall are you and what's your inseam?

If you're going to ride it on the track, you don't need to worry about standover so much as cockpit--the standover is likely to be higher because track frames generally have higher bottom brackets. The Felt 50 cm frames at ADT are almost exactly the same cockpit dimensions as the 52's, and are also comparable to a 46 cm Bianchi. I spent a lot of time measuring them all...

And there are a lot of smallish women who ride the track-- you might be able to score a really nice one used.

And also check with Gian Simonetti-- I know a bunch of people on his frames, he does custom Al frames that are pretty competitive with stock manufactured ones.

Doh, use the internet and say that you live over there.... or have it shipped to a BF compatriot in France, then have them ship it to you!!!

then you have a truly original bike just for you!

Catching up:

Too damn lazy to recap what everybody's been going through...do something for yourselves for a change...lazy shlubs.

Oh, what the hay.

Chucklehead: Better replace your tire cables, crank cables, bottle cage cables, and stem cables...You can never be too safe.

Jsigone: Can I start calling you the Bike Ninja? It has a nice ring to it.

Happytime: Paints horses, and is a groovy chick. Thanks fo' the luv yesterday!

TehK: Cherish your breaks...once you're embedded in the workforce, they will be harder and harder to come by.

alicestrong: That does sound nice. I was stuck in traffic at 5:11 am.

Dave and Busters: Can take a long whiff of my ______ as I walk away. Hate that place. Gimme Chuck E. Cheese any day...or a damn park and a football or something.

VanceMac: 650 wheels are 650 wheels, that's all you need to know.

GrumpyPig: Have you bought the carbon bars yet? Food for thought: You're kind of a big guy, right? Somewhat muscular, correct? What would happen if you apply your Hulk-ian forces upon an unsuspecting set of carbon bars? Chances are they will disintegrate under the onslaught of your mighty power, and you'll go teeth first into your stem. However, if that were to happen, there's a good chance that, if you wrap the tops, the bar wrap will at least slow your impact velocity. EPOXIED FABRIC!!! THAT'S ALL IT IS!!!

/as I ride off on my carbon frame...

Merider1: Hi! Miss you.

Happytime: Wants to be tall. Trust me on this...5' and petite is totally rad. That's justification enough to not get leg extensions. You're 5' at least, right? 4'-10" is even better.

/loves me my 5' DW. I can pick her up and take her places.

Jschen: Get back to work, slacker.

Go_Fast: Rode his bike. I had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming.

Chucklehead: Still waiting on these supposed 'dog' pictures.

Me: My car ordeal is finally coming to an end. After the 2nd replacement of the clutch, it went back to the shop...they tore it all down again to make sure that all the parts that needed replacement were replaced and not just resurfaced or machined. I think they sprinkled fairy dust on the parts, 'cause now the clutch is smooth and grippy...just like it should be. Weird. They didn't align my exhaust, though...so that needs to be done...I look like a damn riced-out Miata or something, with one exhaust tip looking straight out the back and the other checking out the hottie on the sidewalk. Goofy, cross-eyed, n00baliciousness.

Then there's another problem. My radio reception is crap. I've done everything I know how to do, and I still get a 60hz cycle hum and major static. Something ain't grounded right, and I've taken my car apart too many times without finding the solution...arg.

I NEEED my Savage Nation in the afternoon, knowwhatI'msaying Indolent?

Oh well...only 17 days before the Stone ride...guess I should start training, huh?

No burrito for me.

Two reasons:

All due respect to PaulB and his planning, I didn't like the route. Too many signals for nearly 60 miles of it, and going through downtown SD, navigating through Point Loma and by the airport at mile 100 at 4 pm was a pain in the ass. Pendleton was cool, though.

Also, I'm totally out of shape, even for a 'flat' century. My ass can't take a whole day in-saddle. My legs and lungs could probably take it, but I wouldn't be able to sit for a week.

Update: That guy I rode with months ago who is my neighbor and felt completely humiliated by me so he went out and got a $3500 Specialized Tarmac as his first road bike and is now up to 35 mile rides and is waiting and training until at least June before he wants to ride with me again supposedly so he can try to return the humiliation favor but I won't care and it won't happen anyway and that will burn him up even more...

He keeps buying stuff, trying it once, not liking it...then just hands it to me. So far, I have a brand new Headsweats wrap, long-finger gloves, a carbon Topeak microrocket pump, Michelin Krylion tires, a Sram cassette, and other miscellani. Dude is OCP stapled to another OCP'er. Works out in my favor.

I've noticed that Mo' doesn't like the more urban routes in SoCal. I finally realized that the real reason is that they increase the chances or him running into old "friends" that he owes money to. BTW, Mr. Costelli says hi.
