And i got a good ride in today...we did 20 miles in an hour...it hurts...poor ben...all he does is tow and gets no pull at all.
By a car! I hope not, Mark? Or did you mean, by a wayward meteor?
Nope. Just by the bug going around. But the context got lost amongst all the ninja talk...
...though my head feels like maybe it DID get hit by a wayward meteor....

Actually, no. It dies here around this time of year, rain or shine. I've found the boards to be more active when people are riding. I'm always on here though. You have that to look forward to. :D
:p
I stand corrected. You're basically saying that without our bikes, we have no character, personality, or value.:(;)
I can live with that (kisses bike).

my computer is up to spec:D But you're talking about holding that pace for only a few miles, which is fine.
That is part of my "jumping" training, speed jumps that is. Roughly 8-10mph speed jumps in less then 10 second.

Was doing 39.8 the other day on a descent. Yeeehaaaa! One wrong twitch though and... SPARKS! Hopefully the road burn cauterizes open wounds at that speed.
Out in Joshua Tree Jeff was trolling along effortlessly at about 36 MPH... this was on a slight downhill (<1%) with a slight to neutral tailwind...

yah but i couldn't hold it as long as you did, as you dropped me:o
And didn't he try to pass the mini-van he was drafting at 50 on the way down?
that mini van slowed down so I slungshot past it to catch up w/ bittingduck. I think we held 52ish for those 7-8 miles to the gate. That was FUN:D

I think the fastest i've ever gone is almost 40mph on a steep straight downhill, no wind or draft (wasn't pedaling once i got past 30mph). The red light at the bottom was a buzzkill though...
Fastest on a flat surface with a slight tailwind and a draft off a bus was 35mph (did that one on the heavy commuter while wearing a fully loaded camelbak). :D

fastest DH on the new bike so far was 62mph on an 7-8% grade for 2 miles

I am not saying it's impossible...I am just saying...if you can roll out at 30+ mph's for about 2-3 miles that is enough to get you pretty far off the front of a Cat 5 race that averages about 25. Cat 5 races are usually about 11-14 miles or so if that so if you can pull off the front towards the end you should be able to hold guys off and be fine.
Also i can put down about 31-32 on the flats on my own for about 40 seconds maybe and i can all out sprint at about 36-38maybe on my own.
as far as down hills i regurlarly hit about 55ish down Texas street in san diego, and with a 1-2 degree descent i can hold 25ish all day comfortably.

12-18-07, 03:00 PM
i never hit those kinds of speeds.
in fact, the only time i've broken 35mph on a flat section for any measurable amount of time was while drafting a bus and a big rig.

What kind of race are you speaking of. The cat 5 road races here are 48 to 52 miles.

this is what I do, ride at 25-27mph (comfy pace), jump to as fast as you can without getting off the saddle too much, HOLD for as long as you can but don't go beyond redline, go back down to 25 and recover for a minute if that. Jump again. Rise and repeat til you can't jump any more.
What this exercise has done for me, was being able to hold that high of a pace/LT longer and
longer (solo). Might not see the results for a few trys though. I started with this exercise when I started riding with ranchos, what I found is that I can hold their pace, but once a couple of guys stir things up and the pace jumps 4-5mph, I can feel the pain. For me, jumping would be easier if I had an
11t in the back. Which I will order on the 1st.

so does this mean the brewery ride is going to turn into a big pissing contest once we hit the hills? because i think a good portion of the group is just treating it as a fun ride.

The pissing contest will work best if it happens after you hit the brewery and have a few pitchers behind you.

Just ride a couple of MPH under your known comfy flat land speed. If it's 20, ride 17-18 and jump to 25, HOLD. For me, I can cruise at 27-28 on a good day, so I'll jump from 25 or so. The main objective to this to to get beyond you known comfy spot, as well as faster recovery from higher speeds.
