Ok, I think I'm going to build up a Surly CrossCheck and am wondering if my drivetrain will work out ok. I'm planning on running Shimano bar end shifter, a FSA Gossamer Cross crank(38/48), Ultegra frnt der, XT or XTR GS rear der, XT cassette. Evidently Shimano doesn't recomend using a mtn frnt der with road shifters which is why I chose Ultegra. I was also thinking that the extra range of the mtn cassette would be helpful at times.

Any thoughts on this setup? Suggestions on changes or other ideas always appreciated. I've had road bikes and mtn bikes in the past, but am looking for a do-it-all for road riding, light trail riding and commuting.

Rest of the build will include King hubs and headset, Thomson post and stem, Salsa or Ritchey bars, Salsa Delgado rims, Avid Shorty 6 brakes and Salsa skewers (plus all the other stuff needed to do a ground up build that isn't ineteresting enough to take the time to list)

Thanks!

I'm building a similar setup next week - I'll let you know at the end of the week. My "advisors" say it will work.

My setup:

Ultegra triple with ultegra front, ultegra STI shifters, XTR rear, and XT cassette, XTR/DA chain. Hopefully it works. I wanted lots of gears. ;)

I'll post back when I have results.

IF you are using the bar end shifter then it wont be a problem since the front shifter is going to be friction anyway. No indexing problems to speak of. Mountain front der and Road differ slightly in their arm length which affects how much cable pull etc. and they are designed to work with their own family of parts. You can make it work, it just is not recommended. But since you are not using STI then you should be fine with the front friction setup.
