General Cycling Discussion - will this work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

in my quest for a custom bike i've decided to take a 24 inch wheel and put it on my 26 inch bike (the back) so i'm very relaxed while riding
will it work? the gears are the same (18 speed) all i'd worried about is brakes, but i can just put front brakes on it
AWESOME WHEELIE!!
If you are riding flat trails and relatively low speeds, this may be ok. Bike brakes are pretty marginal as is, it is easy to lock a wheel up and skid, and a
skidding front wheel means you have only a few seconds to regain control and prevent a crash. Since the wheel is smaller, and you are tilted backward a bit
you are less likely to take a header, but I suspect you could still manage to do a header in an emergent situation. One brake means that you can scrub speed off much more slowly, so going above 15-20mph and needing a sudden stop will give you sense of the meaning of Einsteins' concept of time dilation,
if you avoid a header. Steve

the brakes arent good on this bike (the fastest i've been is 50 mph and it stopped relatively fast)
it only has back brakes but i can flip them around
ya see, it used to have front and back, but only the front worked right, then after sitting outside a winter the front brake cable was junk and not knowing how to fix or replace cables i just took the front brakes off and went brakeless for awhile until i figured out why the back brakes didn't work (the pads were made too skinny) so i put some OLD used ones on and that's where i've been with it for 6 months now
