Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm planning to ditch work on Thursday to see the arrival of that gigantic monument to European industry, the Airbus A380, when it visits SFO for the first time. Can anyone tell me how to get to a good viewing spot (Bayfront Park in Millbrae, maybe) by bicycle without getting run over? Caltrain to Millbrae or Burlingame seems obvious, but I'm not sure what to do after that. Google Earth doesn't give me any really good ideas, either. Any directions would be appreciated.

You can actually ride on that road right in between the freeway and the take off strip. How long you can stop, well I dunno. It's a bit of wiggle Brisban/eSan Bruno mountain, but not that bad.
From Milbrae BART this would be a short, very short way

You can stop at InNOut on the way back to BART though.

From the Millbrae BART/Caltrain station, just take Millbrae Ave. over Hwy 101 to the the bay shore. Distance is maybe half a mile. You can also ride your bike along McDonnell Rd into the airport.

Okay, that's what I saw, I just didn't know how good that route was for cycling. I'll do it, then.

Lookup Elephant Bar restaurant in Millbrae/Burlingame. The Bay Trail goes right by those restaurants and the view to watch planes land is great from there.

Do you have any more details on when the A380 will be arriving? I found a press release on Airbus's web site but it only stated October 4-5, not a specific time of day. I would love to see that behemoth land too but probably won't be able to get off work :(

All I've heard is that it's supposed to land at 10am on the 4th and it's going to depart on the 5th.

From the south side a club member and I road up the Bay Trail to where the flood control gate is, just south of the airport. We took our break watching planes land and take off. We were at Bayfront Park off Bayshore Hwy.

There's a Media Advisory on the flysfo Web site with the following (and other) info:
Schedule for October 4, 2007 (All times PDT):
9:40 a.m. Scheduled A380 landing
no information as when the plane will be departing on the 5th.

FinVelo, I just found the same media advisory and was about to post it! Anyway I will probably try to stop by the Bayside Park or Coyote Point areas on my way from Oakland -> Palo Alto tomorrow morning. Wish I had a handheld radio scanner ... maybe there will be another flying enthusiasts in the area with a radio that I can eavesdrop on :)

After dropping my car off in RWC for service, I rode up to SFO to see the arrival. Kind of anti-climatic really, but still neat to see. It landed fifteen minutes early:

My pics - not nearly that good, but I have a $150 Canon to match my cheapo Nashbar singlespeed. :)

I saw the F-16s, but couldn't stay for the Blue Angels.
And cycling-wise, the Millbrae Ave/101 crossing could be a little nicer for the cyclists. Other than that, a piece of cake.

Cool pics, thanks for posting :) I didn't get to see the A380 but looking forward to the Blue Angels this weekend.

Yeah. I showed up at 9:10 and was a little shocked that it was early. I am also mad that my shot of the exact touchdown moment is blurry and not post-worthy. :(
