Can someone tell me what the difference between the first crosschecks and the new ones are besides the old one having 1" steer?

The first two years (blue and green paint jobs, respectively) are made with Reynolds 631 tubing. Ever since, it's been 4130, I think. Opinions vary, but I think the earliest model is a bit more prestigious.

I don't get what you mean by prestigious. Can you be more specific? Less eyelets? Generally stronger or weaker?

The older ones had name brand tubing. AFAIK that is the only difference.

AKAIK 631 is a bit lighter than 4130...

welds are nice too...haven't seen a newer one to compare though...

aballas, you pimped my ride!

prestigious: exerting influence by reason of high status or prestige

Basically, I was saying that the first year of the Cross Check (or any model of bike that has staying power) has become a classic. Whether it's better or not, is arguable (although, I think they were lighter w/631). But, it also derives prestige from the fact that so few were produced that first year.
