This was just plain CRAZY! I was in Gray Goat Sports in Indianapolis, IN Saturday afternoon. I walked in to drop off a poster and some applications for a United Way Benefit ride my local club is hosting. There was a “customer” and a salesperson talking about an ’08 orange Orbea Orca there on display. I was waiting for them to finish so I could ask about leaving the ride info. The “customer” had asked a question about the Orbea that the salesperson couldn’t answer….but I was able to answer….so I did. And of course, I chimed in about how great I felt the Orca was (since I have one). And, I just gave a pretty good “testimonial” about the bike. The salesperson got busy with another customer so I stayed and shot the breeze with the “customer” and continued raving about the Orca. I explained I was just dropping off some literature for an upcoming ride. The guy looked at a couple other bikes and commented on some other ones…just basically idle chatter. The “customer” brought the bike to the back and had them air the tires so he could take it for a test ride. I dropped off my paperwork and left. This was about 5:00 PM, Saturday evening. At about 8:30 PM, I get a call from Brian at Gray Goat Sports asking me if I was the guy that dropped off the literature for the bike ride. I told him I was. He then asked me if I knew the guy that was looking at the Orbea Orca. I replied I didn’t. He asked if I caught the guy’s name or any other details about the guy because he had taken the Orca out for a test ride and never returned!! Holy Cow!!! What balls!! This guy steals a bike that sticks out like a sore thumb!! This bike was obviously quite original. It was an ’08 orange Orbea Orca, complete Dura-Ace groupset, Zeus carbon seat post and stem, Zeus alloy bars, the new Mavic wheels with the round carbon spokes…I don’t even know the style of those wheels….but I bet they weren’t cheap!

So, everybody please keep an eye out for this bike. A person should have no trouble spotting this bike or the wheels for that matter. I stopped by the shop on Sunday before I left Indy and expressed how sorry I was about them losing that bike. I told Brian I partly felt to blame since I was raving on and on about that Orca being the bike to have….and now that guy has it! The guy looked like a runner/cyclist type. He was about 5’-8”, maybe weighed 140-150 lbs. soaking wet, dark/dirty blond hair. He was wearing a loose-fitting shirt and I noticed a tattoo on his upper chest…I think it was on his left upper chest….not positive, though…and I couldn’t tell you what it was…I want to say it was like a cross of some sort…but I can’t be positive about that. Brian said the guy had been in the store several times before and had test ridden other bikes. He recalled the guy driving a white Saab. The police were pretty positive about recovering the bike saying that we had given them plenty of information. So, hopefully, this guy gets what’s coming! Hopefully, somebody reading this will know of the guy and turn him in!

sucks for the shop, but i thought all shops required a drivers license in order to test ride a bike?

and btw, i'm pretty sure these are the new mavics you saw:

They said the guy had been in several time previously and left his driver's license to test ride other bikes. This time, Brian said he just got busy and was trying to close, and the guy had test-rode several other bikes....so he just let him out with that one....that really is just too bad, though.
