I'm 30, and haven't ridden a bike in 17+ years. So over Labor Day weekend I rented a bike from Outdoor Recreation at Randolph to see if the old saying is true. Well, it is. Unfortunately its only true for as long as the pedals stay on the bike.
But for the five or so minutes that they managed to stay on, I was really enjoying myself.
I returned the gravity-machine to Outdoor Rec and headed to the BXtra. They had a pleasant looking, but not quite so pleasantly seating Huffy on sale, which was just tall enough for me. One new seat later and my legs, which could previously propel me about 2 miles a stretch, now move me considerably further. Places I used to drive to I now cycle to. Gears are a little squirrely, but for a starter it really gets me around. The hills on Old Cimmaron, 1976, and Pat Booker are particularly fun (OC and PB have bike lanes). I've thought about trying Lookout or even the Mission Trail eventually.
4.5 miles to work, I can get there in 30 minutes if the line at the gate isn't too long. Or worse if there's a train. Randolph, with its tracks and many circles isn't the most bicycle-friendly base.
