Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I guess it was my turn today.

The sun was going below the horizon making it hard to see as the glare was effecting overall vision. As I was passing a mall, a car driven by an elderly man was slowly sticking the nose of his car into the road. I knew this guy could not see me so instead of taking a risk and riding past his bumper, I went behind him riding into the mall lot. At that very moment, I heard a loud crash as he collided with another car while entering the road. I was in shock! Both cars wrecked hard and one was destroyed.

Here's what I learned today. You really have to take special care once the sun starts to go down. This is the second accident I was nearly involved and it happened during this time of the day. Too many elderly are on today's roads and they are a danger. Ride safe.

good thinking, evasive action and glad to hear you're okay- could have been really bad. A friend of mine was nailed pretty bad (he recovered) by an elderly motorist approaching from behind, who was blinded by the setting sun. It's a dicey time to ride but this time of year many of us who commute are riding into some pretty blazing sunsets on the ride home. Thanks for the reminder.

Did you stop to offer to give your number as a witness?

Anyway, nice call. :)
