What tool/items would you consider essential to have with you every time you go out for a ride?

tire patches, tire tools (can't call them irons any more - they're plastic) small pump. Multi- tool and allen wrenches.

In addition to the above, I pack a lock, cell phone, small amount of cash, handi-wipes to clean hands after making a repair, bandaids, etc.

In addition to the good suggestions above, I carry several zip ties (plastic things used to secure wires). They can be used for a multitude of repairs and weigh almost nothing.
