EDIT: I mean shelves the title will not stay edited.

Hello,

I need you guys to help through a few idea into the pot. I am making a desk and have found some purfect shelves in Ikea whihc I will be able to reuse to make a good cheap desk. I will need to transport them approximatly 13 -14 miles accross London. I have a rear rack which I can attach to my bike, I would be prepared to buy http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/Product_arborescence/cycle-and-rolle/cycling-accesso/bike-carrier-an/cycle-lugage-ca/product_4915854/index.html

front rack. The two selfs meassure 1 meter (approx 3' 4") by 520 mm (approx 20.5") each by about 30 mm (1.2" approx).

Better to buy the frount rack have them stood on thier side accross the front where I can see them? on the back similar style? Try and strap them in pannier type posiotions?

Thanks for the help.

T

Sorry misspelled the title should be shelves clearly not selfs, I tried editing the title but every time I save it reverts to the old one. Grrrrr. Once again sorry.

selfs vs. shelves fixed now... although I was tempted to leave it like it was. :D

I would probably strap the shelves flat on the sides of the rear rack, long side pointing up. But this being Ikea, they come in one box, no?

They come in two boxes so it would be possible. Thanks.

How heavy are these shelves?Doesn't Ikea stuff come unassembled?I don't think that rack is strong enough for your purpose.Do you know anyone with a trailer you can borrow or a pack sack large enough?I'd hate to see you get half way home and have the rack fail on you.:)

T - I personally don't go to IKEA for big stuff unless I have my trailer with me. Is there one you could borrow from anyone? 13-14 miles is quite a trip with shelving strapped to your bike.

I've done a few raids in the local IKEA on bike myself (see this post (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=787572) for example). 100 by 52 cm isn't that big, and there are two of them, so you can balance the load. On my IKEA trips the bike felt as if I had full touring load on it, except it handled worse (because I couldn't buckle the stuff to the bike tight enough). I rode carefully and slowly, but made it without any issues. My distance was maybe half of what OP has, though.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Unfortunatly I don't know any one with a trailer to borrow and living in a already overful flat means making and storing a trailer would not be possible.

It is two shelfes that are ment to be used in one of Ikea wardrobes but they work out as cheap solid wood worksuface which I am using for a desk, I am unsure of the weight.

Maybe being a bit ambitious. I shall try and load my bike up with some bits of board I have left over from doing the kitchien of similar size and see how that feels. Thanks for your opionions and concern. I will let you know how I get on next week with any luck.

Fix a temp extension you your rear rack made from bits of wood. You can then lash the shelves to the rack+extenders for more security. I would carry the load wide rather than long and fix some red cloth to the off-side.
