Recreational & Family - Hybrid bike grips needed

I hope this is the correct forum but I couldn't find one specifically for equipment.

I need a new set of grips for my Giant Nutra hybrid bike. The original soft rubber ones are splitting. I looked online but there are 1000 different grips available. Can anyone suggest a pair of grips that will be comfortable for long rides yet long lasting?

I was also wondering if maybe I should just tape the old ones with grip tape but that would be more of a patch solution than a fix and comfort is questionable if I do that.

Any suggestions?

Also it would be nice if there were a specific hybrid bike section on this forum since there are a ton of hybrid bike riders around.

Check out the Specialized web site, or better yet, a dealer near you. I absolutely love their Body Geometry Comfort Grips!!! These are the only grips I use now. They come in two sizes, which include a shorter variety for those with twist shifters. They also make a women's specific grip for those with smaller hands. The new ones lock on, and can be adjusted much easier.

I'd say give your LBS a try. The usually have a "bargain bin" with things like cheap grips. And if not, they're not usually very much new anyway. Plus you can feel them first before you buy.

Then get a pair of gloves while you are there.

What are the lockable grips I am reading about. I understand they are not supposed to turn on the bar but how do they do that?

I love my Ergons. They're shaped perfectly for riding after you've spent the day at a computer.

Do these grips have an open end that I can mount my Myrrycle bar end mirror? I would hate to have to cut out the end of such a nice grip.

The Specialized grips are sweet looking. I will check them out if I can find a store that sells them.

The new grips do have a plug that goes in the end of the bar. That way you can put a bar end mirror in without having to cut them. However, make sure you are getting the version that comes with those plugs.

As for how they "lock." They have a screw with an allen head in the end (2.5mm, I believe) that you tighten down into the handlebar itself. It is hard to explain, but they are pretty slick.

Grip-tek has some great foam hand grips. Check them out online. Don't leave the dash out of the name, or you won't find it. You may have to do a little fitting, but a bench grinder and a hacksaw or miter saw will do just fine. bk

Can always head down to the local lawn mower shop and buy foam or rubber grips there. They come in different lengths, thicknesses, and inner diameters.
