As promised, my ride report for the 3 day Southeast BF Mountain Ride. I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible, no need for some long winded post.

Friday – Polara and I met BikeWNC and rm –rf for a short ride up to Western Carolina University. Nice little ride along the river with a few hills that weren’t too hard, but just sorta long. Afterwards, all 4 of us went to Lulu’s for supper. There’s a brief report on pg10 of the SEBF thread.

Saturday – Met everyone at the Overlook just past Pinnacle Ridge Tunnel. Got a brief safety meeting from BikeWNC for those who haven’t ridden on the Parkway before about traffic and decending. Headed out shortly after 10am and immediately started to climb. It was pretty much climbing the whole time up to Richland Balsam. I didn’t think I would ever get up there, my right hamstring kept feeling like it was getting tight and I think I needed about 2 more gears! BikeWNC fulfilled his blueberry obligation – I did get a handfull on the way up to Richland Balsam and oh boy! They were delicious.

From Richland Balsam, we rode down to Devil’s Courthouse overlook and a then turned around and went back to the next overlook to have a brief rest and wait on those who went on towards Graveyard Fields. Very nice views from this overlook. When we started back towards Richland Balsam, I immediately got a cramp in my right quad and tried to ride on through it. I did manage to get it to feel a little better but decided to catch a ride with the SAG, which was being driven by Tappets GF, Elizabeth. We also picked up cnickgo and the two of us hitched a ride back to Richland Balsam. Guess we cut out about 4mi total riding, as I had 30.5mi of riding on the Garmin. From there, I had to finish the ride because, well, it’s all pretty much downhill and I absolutely love the downhill sections:D. I hit 46.8mph coming back down (or on some decent)!

Afterwards, everyone was hungry and thirsty, so Tappets, Elizabeth, Polara, 3mta3, CycleMagic, FormulaUgh, WheresWaldo, rnhood, BikeWNC, and myself went to Nick & Nate’s in Sylva for a late lunch. Food, beer, and company were great. After lunch, those who needed to head on home did so and the rest of us went back to our hotel to shower and nap before meeting at 553 W. Main for dinner. BikeWNC, 3mta3, Polara, rnhood, and myself were the only ones left from the Saturday ride group….Conversation seemed to revolve around tubes of some sort and some other audio equipment, and then eventually bikes. The food was great at this place and I just chilled listening to the guys talk guy talk:rolleyes:. I don’t talk much when I’m really tired, so I was fairly quite this evening. We finished up dinner & talked about where we were to meet the next morning. rnhood decided not to participate in Sunday’s ride, 3mta3 headed back to Durham, Polara and I went back to the motel and slept for about 9.5hrs!

Sunday – Polara and I met BikeWNC and one of the local guys he rides with, Guy (and older gentleman in his mid 60’s I think), along with Tappets and Elizabeth. We rode the Burningtown loop, which consisted of some climbing, and, in all honesty, they weren’t too hard, but my legs said otherwise at times. There were some nice flat stretches where we really picked the pace up and it was like riding back in the Clayton area:). It was a great morning for a ride! A bit chilly for me - my toes, fingers, and knees got really cold, but by the end of the ride, I was toasty. BikeWNC, Polara, and myslef went to Subway for lunch, then we headed home…..

The rest of ya can add your thoughts and comments about this weekend’s ride if you want to. I’m now looking forward to May ’08 when we hopefully do a Spring ride. I know I’ll be up there before that tho – I’m hooked on the mountains!

When your bike weighs close to 30 pounds it's great for descending. Going up on the other hand, is not quite as fun. We went up a lot. I kept trying to shift into that extra gear I didn't have on Sunday's ride. :( Overall, I had a great time riding, and it was nice to finally put faces and names to screen names. It was gorgeous up there, but a little bit on the chilly side for me(note that I'm wearing arm and leg warmers in every pic). :)

Saturday started out a bit chilly. I was worried at about 0800 when I saw my own breath outside. But by the time we rolled out, it turned out to be just the right temperature. Just lovely.

It really helped that we had full sun and almost no wind. It's amazing how fast it can get cold when it clouds over or gets windy.

oh, no kidding! The weather was just perfect.

It was really windy yesterday on my group ride in Hick-town, and I found myself being so thankful for the calm weather on the BRP.

There was a safety meeting? No wonder I got all those dirty looks as I weaved erratically across the road. :o

so I underestimated my low gear before the ride... after a good scrubbing (its been a chore to see what was once silver on this cassette)... I figured out I was riding a 42-21 as my lowest gear. No freaking wonder I was out of the saddle so much!

OMG. 42/21!! But, wait a minute, you are young so you shouldn't have had too much trouble:) You did great!

yea, he's just trying to make us look good. holding back, I say, holding back.

Yup I was holding back ;)
Even with my killer gearing though... I still had the time of my life out there. It felt disappointing riding my normal pothole/gravel/sketchy traffic route today.

oh, vega, you do too much "deciding"....just plan on it. We'll have a grand day. Don't forget, Brett's Ride is this Sunday. Come up and ride with us.

If it wasn't for someone else on the BRP ride saying they have actually ridden with VV, I think you are spot on with this assessment.

VV, you seem to have commitment issues? (<< strange thing for a guy to say to a gal)

I am already decided on the spring ride, and I hope to see some of you all on the Mitchell training rides this next spring also.

Vega, assessing pros and cons, I'll note that you probably shouldn't go on a ride like this if you dislike:

(1) Riding challenging (but manageable) terrain at a social pace;

(2) Fantastic mountain scenery; and

(3) Meeting other Bike Forum members.

Way-ul, if y'all put it like that, I reckon I'll mosey on up that way in May....

*holds breath*

:D but seriously, Vega, you would really enjoy this ride. Everyone was very patient with one another and the main goal was to have a social ride. People were given free reign to ride at their pace and folks were gracious enough to re-group as often as we needed to. No rock stars here! Just fun people having a good time. So, no worries, eh?

It really wasn't a race, there was a whole variety of people who were just out to ride. This was actually my first group ride, I usually ride by myself and was extremely nervous about people judging or not accepting me. I found the exact opposite!

you mean my best buy of the century? $9 knee warmers? I'll probably never use those silly knickers again! I was loving my knee warmers on Saturday.

Perhaps next time BikeWNC will take us to down to Charlie's Creek Road for hill sprints on the 13% grade. ;)

That will be reserved for the May ride only, when we are all grateful for the beginning of spring and another great ridin' season. :)

Says the person who won't ride if it's colder than 42 or warmer than 80. :p

Correct. I can find those temps all year long somewhere between 1500 and 6000' and the hours of 6am to 8pm. ;)

I was thinkin' of the competitive ridin' season. Not the recreational/casual ridin' season.

It's true that one can ride all year, and, once I have my cold-weather clothes, I'll even be able to ride in February (last year, I could not -- all I had was shorts, jersey and windjacket). I'm lookin' forward to it!

There is going to be a May ride? You folks are evil. I so want to get back up there to ride. It would be almost impossible to get up there when my boys are still in school M to F unless it is Memorial Day weekend.

BikeWNC
10-08-07, 05:31 PM
I there is a May ride, it most likely will not be on Memorial Day or Mother's Day weekends. Too much chance of traffic on Memorial Day and Mother's Day will probably limit too many people.

Indeed, we have all winter to carefully plan this. Such that most can attend, such that it doesn't interfere with a CLT or Asheville TT, etc. Perhaps we should start an early poll on everyone's obligations so as to maximize participation in a spring ride? <curious Vega look> Quite natch, I won't know the CLT TT schedule 'til about January or February, methinks. :(

BTW, hey, Mollusk! What are your best weekends for at least one good ride? Remember that these rides are usually three over three days (Fri-Sat-Sun). You can ride one or two or all three days. Your choice. :)

Next year, I'm gonna try all three, though I'll be working again by then....

If the weather holds out... I'm going to try and ride up to Howard's Knob. I mapped it out real quick.

I'll be attempting this sometime next weekend (this weekend is part of fall break). Anyone wanna join?
