I thought I'd start this thread for news in our area (and surroundings). If you find something and a link, feel free to share. Sometimes, I can't believe some of the news when I read it, and since this happened near Mt. Baldy Road recently, I thought I'd share. Who can be mad up in those mountains? Come on. Oh, and don't any of you be carrying swords on future Baldy rides! :p

I have an idea! Let's take the premise of a moderately amusing 30 second commercial and stretch it out micron-thin over an entire season of a lame sitcom. That'll work! What could go wrong?

Why is that a 'condition'? I don't mean to sound cold or callous (okay, maybe a little) but why is it when someone does something stupid like this (eating their own (or someone else's) hair) we come up with a latin name for it and call it a 'condition'.

Phil, I'm not a psychologist, but there are actually a good deal of folks out there who do things that you may deem stupid, but they can't help themselves. It's called a condition because generally there is a chemical imbalance in the brain that goes along with the behavior. There are manic despressives, people with schizophrenia, OCD suffers, etc. who suffer from various chemical imbalances, and thus is the case for people like the woman being reported. It must be awful to crave eating one's own hair (gross), I would suspect. Of course, people who are "cutters" and slash themselves, that must be awful too. Point being, unless you suffer from it or treat it, it is doubtful that you can truly understand what the person has to deal with.

Maybe I didn't phrase that perfectly.
I can understand the mental imbalance part of it, but wouldn't it be classified under something like OCD? Why does this deserve it's own name? What makes 'having the desire to masticate one's own hair' a specific enough condition to warrant a name...
same with cutting/slashing... sure, there are people that do it, but at the basic level we are talking about a compulsion to act which is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. The symptom is being labeled as the distinct problem, whereas the problem should identify with many possible symptoms...
Pretty soon people are going to want a support group, charity bike ride, and special exceptions for people that suffer from "trichophagia" when they should really be campaigning to get funds for OCD which is the real cause of the problem...

Phil...I was listing to talk radio (Savage is funnay), and they have this commercial that goes something like this:
"Are you nervous meeting new people?"
"Are you shy...or worry about your appearance?"
"Do you occasionally get sweaty palms or underarm perspiration?"
"Then you may have a condition known as Social Anxiety Disorder, or SAD...and it's an affliction that affects millions of people each day."
I'm more or less in agreement with you...if someone is eating enough hair to have a raccoon removed from their stomach, that person should probably stop eating their hair. Tie a string around your finger to remind yourself not to eat your hair...or cut your hair short so you can't snack on it. It's a 'condition' that's easily 'cured' with 'common sense'.

Actually, it is OCD related and I doubt there will ever be a charity event for it as it is a very rare condition.
But here, you can read all about it: http://web4health.info/en/answers/child-ttm-comorbid.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichotillomania
In particular, to your thoughts on this being a symptom of something greater:
"These disorders are a cross between mental disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) because the sight or feel of a body part causes the individual anxiety, and physical disorders such as stereotypic movement disorder because the person performs repetitive movements without being bothered by or completely aware of them. The current classification of trich as an impulse disorder with pyromania, pathological gambling and kleptomania, has been called into question as inadequate and in need of revision.[3] One study showed that individuals with TTM have decreased cerebellar volume.[4] Like people with other OCD-related disorders (for example, body dysmorphic disorder, impulse control disorder, kleptomania, Tourette syndrome), people with TTM have a reduced ability to transport serotonin at the presynaptic level.[5] Anxiety, depression and OCD are more frequently encountered in people with TTM.[6] People with TTM may also eat/chew the roots of the hair that they pull, referred to as trichophagia. In extreme cases this can lead to Rapunzel syndrome, and even death.[7][8][9] Some individuals with TTM may feel they are the only person with this problem due to low rates of reportage.[10]

You boys are being brutish today.
And might I remind you that if you translated this over to alcoholism, you'd really being stepping in it, Mo, by stating the above as: "if someone is [DRINKING SO MUCH AS TO HAVING TO HAVE HIS/HER STOMACH PUMPED], that person should probably stop [DRINKING SO MUCH]. Tie a string around your finger to remind yourself not to [DRINK]...or [BREAK THE BOTTLE] so you can't [DRINK OUT OF] it. It's a 'condition' that's easily 'cured' with 'common sense'
Doesn't sound as easy-breezy when you apply it to something that is known to be caused by a chemical imbalance, now does it? Alcoholism and one drinking too much is accepted as something that needs treatment (and that the person needs help with), but a person who is suffering from an unknown and odd ailment such as TTM is just considered stupid or something easily fixed with common sense.
That's kind of insulting to all mental disorders/diseases, IMO. We don't know, unless we suffer from it or treat it what these people experience.

Granted that some disorders are based on a chemical imbalance. In my opinion, I would argue that many (a majority?) of alcoholics are not, in fact, chemically imbalanced at all, but claim they are to keep doing it.
/This, coming from somebody so able (and understandable) to succumb to any sorts of depression, anxiety, and/or pharmaceutical escapism...but haven't. I could, and could simply say that I'm chemically imbalanced and have a disorder.
Sorry if I came across as brutish. I just don't like how personal issues seem to become a 'disorder', and is no longer in the hands of the person to fix it. Leave that up to the professionals and/or medications.
I fully concede that chemical imbalances do happen, and are tragic.
