Does everyone really time their hillclimbs? I've never timed a ride, I just know the same hills keep getting easier. Am I missing a secret?

I guess an accomplishment would be 8500' and 130+ miles since Saturday morning.

I don't know the exact dates but it goes something like this....

Sept 06 - Got my first road bike.

April 07 - First century (Chico Wildflower). I determined (at the time) that was my last century.

May 07 - 707 miles for the month including my second century (Montecello Century)... oops thought the first one was enough!

May-July 07 - Placed 3rd in points in a weekly mountain bike race series (Sport class ages 20-29)

August 07 - Climbed Mt. Diablo for the first time with an unofficial time of 1:03 (starting at the Athenian School)

September 07 - Climbed Mix Canyon Road. The toughest climb I have and probably will ever do. Also completed the Auburn Century... damn these centuries!

October 07 - Mt Diablo challenge this weekend (my goal is less than 1 hr to the top)! Foxy's Fall century later in the month.

Very nice! I once weighed 225lbs but I am now in the low 170's. That's not all due to cycling though. Diabetes caused a major change in my diet as well.

Bummer on the Diabetes.

But don't you feel better having all that weight off? I'm now gunning to 175.

Accomplishments: Finished my second MS 150 ride.
Raised over $2000 for the first time for the MS150/Waves to Wine. I raised $1800 last year.

Climbed 5k feet for the first time a few months back with some BF'ers. Prior to that Dallas didn't have 5k ft of anything to climb on a bike. hehe!

Climbed about 7500 ft for the first time at the MS ride this year. Again, Dallas is flat, Cali isn't! haha!

Met some fellow Norcal BF'ers this year and all have been very cool!

I hope to be able to post that I climbed Mt. Tam, Diablo and Hamilton by this time next year!

I guess that's about it...

Does everyone really time their hillclimbs?
Not all of them, but there are several "benchmark" climbs in the area and many people use them as a gauge of fitness/ability. Old La Honda (East) is hands-down the best known. Everybody knows their best time there. Kings Mountain & Montebello times will also give someone a good idea of climbing ability.

I've never timed a ride, I just know the same hills keep getting easier. Am I missing a secret?

12/05: Bought first road bike in 20 years.

2006: Rode aforementioned bike in 5 centuries, 3 metric centuries, for a total of 2700 mi. for the year

2007: Essentially abandoned aforementioned road bike for a tandem; completed 7 centuries, 3 metric centuries, and 2 time trials on a tandem this year.

8/07: Rode first solo TT, placed 6th of 13 CAT 4 women.

And the year's not finished...Foxy's Fall Century beckons, as do at least 2 self-supported centuries.

Can't wait to see what '08 holds for us!

June 07- Bought first mountain bike (stupidjumper FSR) since 1990 Marin Bear Valley that I hadn't ridden in about 10 years. Took it off-road on 2 rides, and about 600 miles of road use until...
8/26/07- Bought used Trek 5200... first road bike since 1989 Panasonic DX-4000 (only rode it for a year before crossing over to the darkside of mountain biking).
9/23/07- First self-supported century in 18 years after being back on a road bike less than a month.
10/3/07- Rode fluid trainer 4 consecutive nights for 1 hour at about a 20mph pace. :p
10/4/07- Plan to beat 10/3/07 record and make it 5 nights... :p
Current plan: See abdominal muscles by 1/1/08. ( I can see my adam's apple now which I find amazing.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:) and ride in an at least one "organized century" in the coming year.

Mix Canyon, 10-04-07 at a snails pace of 80 minutes. Sadly, I am not joking. I suck at climbing, that's why I am working on it. It's half the length of Alpe d'Huez, and twice as steep. My first time all the way up. Chris Horner holds the record for this climb. Last 7/10ths of a mile is reported to be 23% or 24%. UGH.

Biked 5000 miles so far in 2007, almost all of them commuter miles that would have ended up on the car.

Hey I thought this was sticky?

Anyway, thought I'd record this here: new PR, well, actually "only recorded time" up Kings today in the Low Key series... 27:something. Yeah, that is not any great thing, but I gave it a pretty good go and I am not really a climber.

Tomorrow I'll have another one: first cyclocross race! Looking forward to that.

First Century: Konocti challenge, Clear Lake, CA. 106 miles in just over 8 hours elapsed, 14.9 average. I started riding seriously last January, after approximately 25 year hiatus.

Did you really??? Wow! I still haven't mustered up the cojones to do that, despite my willingness to take on Cantelow, Steiger, and Vine St. repeats on the tandem (as well as half-bike). Maybe I'm afraid of getting my *ss handed to me on Mix...

You realize, of course, that this hill-lover is going to have to make an attempt, now, however weak it may be. Thanks, I think. ;)

Will we be seeing you and the family at the picnic on the 21st? At Foxy's on the 20th?

I have to work that weekend, unfortunately. I know you can do Mix Canyon if I can. I bet you can do it faster. I've seen a tandem going up on one of my earlier failed attempts.

The more I ask around, for a person of my limited experience (< 8mo.) making up diablo in 1:21:21 with 53/39 up front and 12/27 in back is something for me to smile about.

My OLH time = 28min. I'll try and get sub 25min. before the rainy cold miserable season gets in full swing.

At 52 I got back into cycling a year ago. Except for one day I've commuted every day to work this semester 16 miles round trip.
This summer my wife and i did Seattle to portland (2 days, 100 miles each)
We also did waves to Wine.
I rode to the summit of Diablo for the first time in 20 years.
Oh, lost almost 50 pounds in the process.

I guess I should have some sort of summit time goal now, but 1 hour seems unrealistic. Is there an standard intermediate time, or should I just make one up? 1:15. Ok. That's it. Sometime next year 1:15. Yeah....

OLH is a two hour drive when you live in Antioch. Diablo to the North Gate is less than 30 minutes, 45 if you're going around to the south side.

Curtis I time myself on lots of different things locally - Diablo from the North Gate, time to the end of Deer Valley, time to the staging area on Morgan Territory. I also mountain bike so I have a PB for the Ridge Trail.

I guess I need to time myself from the South Gate of Diablo at some point. :)

How is riding on Deer Valley? I worry about the lack of a shoulder and the crazy cars. Do you then take Marsh Creek Road? That seems even more dangerous. What's your experience been?

PrincessZippy
10-10-07, 05:18 PM
I usually ride Deer Valley and Marsh Creek and then go either to the reservoir or to Morgan Territory on the weekend and it's not bad. But I also didn't find the vehicle traffic on Rte. 1 for Waves to Wine to bad - except for the lady pulling a trailer who hit the rider in front of me. In general I just try to wear bright clothes and not be in the way.

I've ridden Deer Valley/Marsh Creek/the reservoir a few times after work, if I can be on the bike by 3:30. It gets me there early enough that traffic isn't bad and it's counter commute on Deer Valley.

I actually really dislike riding Lone Tree by all the shopping centers - Lowes, Home Dept, etc. I worry about those drivers making sudden turns and not seeing me.

Well I Finally climbed Calaveras Road and made it to the top. Every Thursday we have this group ride from work that meets close to Piedmont Rd. and then we head up Calveras and then continue on Felter Road until the lead rider comes back and then we turn around and head up Calaveras to the top of the wall. 've been on this ride about 5 times and never been able to make it up there without either stopping to catch my breath or to the top of Calaveras. Well, on the last of our series for this year, I finally made it up without stopping and for the first time to the top of Calaveras. It felt good. Now my next goal is to try and make it up Sierra.

and you're not winning cat 5 races? Now I'm REALLY worried about my first races this coming year. I've only been to the summit twice and my 2nd time was 1:14 (where do you time from -- there is a gate on the southside that we reset our times at, but i'm afraid i started it too late).

Ah, don't worry about your first races next year. (I didn't win any Cat 5 races mostly because I'm a terrible sprinter--now I can be a terrible sprinter in Cat 4;))

My time was from the Athenian School as part of the Mt. Diablo Challenge. Is that where most people time from? I don't know. It was my first time, but now I'll definitely have to make the time to get down there and do it a lot more in the coming 12 months.

If you search for Old La Honda on bikely you'll find a lot of good routes using it.

There's a small parking area on Sand Hill Rd just W of 280. Or you can park at Stanford campus on the weekend and ride over from there.
