View Full Version : Ride Wednesday Morning

I'm riding with Vance and whoever else makes the SFVBC(?) Wednesday morning ride. It starts at 8:30 and goes til it's over. I don't know the stats, I'm assuming it's over 50 miles and I know it's got several climbs including Topanga from PCH, which is a tad bit steep and probably Malibu canyon from Mulholland over to PCH.
I'm assured it's a friendly ride with regroups. If anyone has been curious about this ride or just wants to play hooky that day and do a nice ride, this would be a good day for it. You know you deserve a day off :)
The ride starts at the strip mall off the 101 & Valley Circle on Mulholland. Here...

I've been thinking about it for some time, but I've been skeered away by all the stories I've heard about V and his SFVBC posse. You know, the ritualistic stuff they do at the tops of hills... with the body paint and goat heads and chicken blood and stuff. It's just not proper, ya know?
P.S. Are we still climbing on Sunday, Ronjon?
I wish I could, I have the day off but I have a mid-term at 3 on Wed, I have to study :)
Next time!

Come on out for this ride if you can make it. This is probably the last time I'll be able to make this ride for a while. I'm not too worried about what they do at the top of the hills. They'll have plenty of time to dance in their goat leggings before I get to the top.
Sunday looks good, probably non Decker option. I'll put up a route tonight when I get home.

I'll be there. And I think Mkadam said he'd be there. We've had very good turnouts the past few weeks, taking advantage of the great weather.
Ovo: I'm surprised you need to study; just come out for the first leg out to westlake and head back.
HT: promises, promises; all talk, no delivery. :p
Shai: are you joining for your usual pre-work workout?

I'm still in tomorrow. Unfortunately, something came up for Sunday so I can't organize a ride :(

Sorry, I didn't make it Wed AM. Last week, traffic was bad, causing me to be late by about 15-mins. So this week, I left the house about 25-mins earlier than last week. Unbeknownst to me, a watermelon truck had rolled over on the I-5, which the 14 feeds into just south of Newhall. It took me 70-minutes to get to the I-5 (usually takes 10 mins) and another 20-mins just to get to Sylmar. Amazing. I love California traffic. So I bailed, realizing I would be later this week than last, even though I started earlier.
Hope you all had fun.

Got back from this ride a while ago. This is a great ride for those of you looking to do some higher pace riding in a friendly, non race environment. The ride from the start in Calabasus to the corner bakery in westlake has some rolling hills where the group really set a quick pace. Naturally I was dropped somewhere along the way. Vance was kind enough to hold up for me and we took a shortcut to the bakery avoiding the trip around the lake.
After the bakery we headed back to Mulholland via Cornell. The group split several times as different people wound up on different routes. I would up taking Mulholland to Old Topanga back which took me home. I'd originally wanted to take Stunt, but had a flat after Las Virgines which took the last bit of wind from my already sagging sails.
I'd make this ride on a regular basis if I was able to. Great training ride.

I'm a terrible friend. I've been telling everyone that the wed ride is great, and with a diverse group or riders/levels. And while I wasn't looking, it has turned into a mild hammerfest. Especially now that racing season is over and the racers are showing up for the first leg of the ride. Ronjon was a trooper, of course. But the lesson here is not to listen to anything I say. Not that anyone ever did. :)

It is a diverse group, today you had Keith Brodsky at one end, and me at the other end. If that's not a diverse group of rider level, nothing is....
My favorite moment of the day is after the break, one of the women came up (the south african woman. Karen?) and was asking me how it was going etc etc. During the friendly chat, I found out she was a mother of 4 with an 18 year old (she must have started early, cause I thought she was about my age). As we were chatting, the road started to go up gradually and my breathing got labored as she kept chatting. Then the hill kicked up and she pretty well dropped me like a hot potato. hahaha.
As Sara said, it's good to have your butt kicked sometimes :)

Ronjon , it was good to finally put a face to your name. You did great today, most of us know that route very well and there are spots where we all accelerate. After a few times on the ride you will figure out where speed up and where to relax.
By the way I lived in Topanga for many years and I was a Hippy.

I have a 911 call into cassave to see if it is repairable. Otherwise, I will be selling all my non-essential possessions on ebay tomorrow.

Yes.. ;)
2007 585 and 595 models carry over to 2008 with color changes. I've seen some sweet deals on 2007 framesets.

if the frame is aluminum, which you told me it was...then I would just get a new bike. It's very hard to "repair" aluminum.
Cassave/Steve, builds Steel bikes doesnt he? They're really sweet looking!!
GL vance let us know what you get

Feel free to pass along info. I know Bicycle John's is pushing them. Price is okay, but not quite fire sale.

Thanks, nice to meet you also. I'd love to make it back for that ride, but I fear my work won't look kindly on that.
Congrats on not being a hippy anymore :p :D
