What is the best way to ship a bicycle? All the normal ways seem to say that the box is too big. What are the normal dimensions for a bicycle box?

Good question. I'll eventually have to cross that bridge at one time or another. How about your LBS? You could ask them if they could box up your bike (they get new bikes in and can save left over shipping materials?).
Good luck.

MOST bicycle boxes are just under maximum dimension and are shipable. I've shipped bikes with UPS and FedEx using free bike boxes from my LBS. Your LBS will give you a bike box for FREE, including all the plastic tabs for protecting wheel and frame protrusions.

When you pick up the box ask them to check the dimensions. All the way around the box plus the length should be less than 130" If it is close mark the box with the dimensions. And it will ship at the higher rate as it is still "oversize"
