Bicycle Mechanics - Tools

Any body know what tools I should get for a first (real) bike as in not from wal-mart. I know a few toothbrush cone wrenches.

There is a bunch of other stuff. Getting it depends on your skills, what kind of bike you have, and how much money you can spend.

Hex keys, tire levers, patch kit, and pump to take with you. I carry an Topeak Alien multitool.

Other tools - buy them as you need them to fix your bike. Good quality tools like Park are worth getting. A set of combination (ring one end, C the other end) 8mm - 17mm are also useful.

and im getting a trek 4500 Mtb i have a tight budget

i like thta idea of buyin as i need em but i dont know if the closest bike shop to me has tools in stock(and well i dont wanna wait a week for tools i need) and i dont think it even sells park.

I think im gonna by those tools from the start

and hope i dont need anything else

It would be an odd shop not to handle Park. But Trek dealers carry wrenchforce. Good stuff I hear. Pedros is also making some good tools. You can also get most tools from Sears or Advance, except of course things like cone wrenches.

Does Park Tool warrant their stuff like Craftsman and Snap-On do? Like if a tool breaks, can I take it back and get a new one for free?

A low cost tool not mentioned that you should have from the beginning, is a spoke wrench.

Tools that you can buy as you need include, 15 mm pedal wrench, crank extractor, sprocket remover, bottom bracket extractor, cable cutter, work stand, but check that your LBS has them in stock and price, so when the need arises you wont waste time searching for one at the right price.

Where does everyone stand toolboxwise I mean should I get alot of small one as I go or one huge one. Just bored and dont know I'm not really erging anybody to answer.

Buy one box way bigger than you think you will need, with lots of drawers.

I second AndrewP's comment. You can get a lot of mileage (so to speak) from a good multi-tool, like those made by Topeak or Crank Brothers. If you don't use chains that have a master link, you'll also need a chain tool. Park makes one that works well (even on hyperglide chains) and is inexpensive.
