Commuting - Cycling was the king in NYC today

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was watching the live coverage of the power outages in NYC today. An overhead shot of the city showed the gridlock caused by not having traffic lights. The cars were stopped by the constant flow of pedestrians. What a mess ...
Then you see this biker zip to the intersection, slow down, slice through the crowd and gone. I'll bet a few of those pedestrians become bike commuters after today.

You got here first! I was going to say that...
I remember when a truck overturned on I-285 in Atlanta this year and spilled chemicals all over. The freeway was shut down for many miles.
It took me the same time to get home as usual. Not like the poor motorists I saw.
Today I watched pics of the Brooklyn Bridge as an entire group of lanes was filled with pedestrians, but no cars. One lady said she walked 60 blocks, another man said he walked about 50 blocks, with another 50 to go.
On a bike, just another fun challenge! Bike = Freedom.

I was one of those bike commuters in Manhattan during the blackout but you didn't see me zipping through the traffic. First, there were TOO many people on the streets and cars, trucks and buses were blocking intersections. I had to get off the bike several times as the streets by 42nd were as crowded as New Years Eve.
Overall, the bikers were happy about the situation. I heard some saying "Today's the best day to be out" while others were singing. I don't recall seeing ANY bikers unhappy about the situation. You were in the captains chair if you had a bike.
I would have had a better time if my Toy Store bike didn't get a flat but it wasn't that bad in the end. I can't wait for the next blackout. I put slicks on the bike. Zoom... Zoom.....
