EDIT: My fingers slipped and I posted a one word post originally.

It has come to my attention that there aren't enough MTB rides amongst the BF crowd.

Why not?

I'm thinking of doing a beginner friendly ride in San Clemente/Rose Canyons down in San Diego. Any interest?

Because mountain bikes hate us and want to kill us all.

But..probably a bit too far for me...

I ride mountain bikes, but it's much less convinient, more chance of crashing, but it is friendlier.

Kinda far from here, but some of us are doing a grueling mtb ride up and down Mt Wilson on Oct. 20th. I'll start a thread later.

Hey Mark. I'm interested...Why not?

...the reason there's not more MTB rides in SoCal is because more people plan road rides.

/obvious.

PS. Don't mind Indolent...he's still angry that his handlebars tried to take a core sample of his chest on his one and only BF MTB ride.

PPS...I also feel the skill differences are completely magnified on the trail. Road rides can cater to all sorts of riders, because you're still on the road. Fast climbers can have just as much fun as the tortoises and fast descenders.

However, you get an experienced trail rider bombing down a rocky single track that an inexperienced rider might have to walk down. It takes the fun out of it, I gather.

Walking DOWN?! I thought you're just supposed to crash and slide/roll down.

You just described me. My true MTB friends won't ride with me. I enjoy getting out for a trail ride several times a month (yesterday), but I will not put life and limb on the line (I can't afford to). I can climb the fire roads with the best of them, but I never saw a rock garden that I didn't want to walk. If we had a ride that was for reasonably fit but totally wussy mountain bikers, that might be fun.

I'm interested too! I'm kinda bummed that I didn't make Drew's Chino ride last time. Just let me know if there are any fatal-level cliffs in advance!

Jerk. I descend just fine. I fell going up not down. And I wouldn't still be mad except the MTB cackles insanely everytime I step into the garage.

After four months off the mountain bike (that's when I picked up my road bike), I did a little ride with a few friends last night. Only 8 miles total, but a nice night ride. One thing I forgot was how soft and spongy the mountain bike is compared to the road bike. Another thing that I forgot was how much slippery it was riding on loose dirt and sand. I'm hoping to continue at least once a week for the mountain bike.

Unfortunately, SD is a bit far for me and won't be able to make your ride. In the mean time, I know I won't be consistent, but I'm going to try to ride Hostetter Fire Road (Burbank) at least once a week. And you're right, we need more mountain bikes in the SoCal Forum. :D

I ride 5 - 6 days a week in the Inland Empire and OC. Hoping to go do SART within the next few weeks.

From what I've read about your rides, you should be very familiar with the area! At the top of La Tuna Canyon, just before the freeway entrance to the 210, there is a little area to park. That's the beginning of Hostetter Fire Road. It's not technical at all, it's just a climb to the top... about 1300 ft elevation gain in less than 4 miles.

Start of Hostetter Fire Road (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=la+tuna+canyon+road+and+hostetter+fire+road,+sunland,+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.817312,69.257812&num=10&iwloc=addr&iwstate1=saveplace)

I guess you can ride a mtb on the SART, but it is paved...isn't it? :)

Not sure if you're joking, or serious.

A smile would seem to indicate jest, but generally one uses a wink for that...

SART is one of SoCal's best mtn. biking trails.

There's 30 mi. or so of off-road singletrack, on the SART, in the San Bernardino mountains.

Chances are pretty high that I'll find myself up there this weekend...

We call those "road rides". ;)

Seriously, most mtn. bikers I know are bored to tears by fire road, and unless the ride involves some spectacular scenery, or awesome singletrack, we'll avoid fire-roads whenever possible.

Otherwise we might as well be riding on the road.

Not all singletrack involves putting "life and limb on the line" either. There are plenty of fun trails around that less-skilled riders can ride, and more skilled riders can still enjoy.

Though it is somewhat more difficult finding off-road rides that total newbies can ride, that will still be interesting to more experienced riders.

I can't believe I've lived in Rancho Cucamonga for 20 years and riding for half that and I have never ever rode SART. How crowded does this get on weekends?

 and another  There are some of us, Trevor, who are chick-an sheat to ride those single tracks. I've been down one and will never go again!

Personally, I think there can be several levels of mtbke rides organized to suit all needs. And this chick-an needs a fire road, boring or not. :p

:-)And it's also pretty flat at the top of the hills, so it provides a stable enough platform for us to give her a little kick to get her rolling.

j/k, I suck too.

Are you going to carry me down the single track if I freeze like a goat - like I did the last time? :pWhy don't you come with us on the 20th? We'll climb 5000 feet in the first 13 miles or so, then drop down to Red Box on the road, then descend the Gabrielina Trail, 15 miles of craziness. Last time there had been storms, so the trail was in bad shape and it took 4 hours to drop 15 miles. This time there probably won't be any 30 foot wide, 2 1/2 foot deep water crossings.

I'm gonna have to think about doing this loop. Do you access the Toll Road from Eaton Canyon? I used to ride up and through Henninger Flats but I haven't since that major landslide down below a couple of years back. :D

Not all singletracks have scary drop offs like this place:

Some take nice routes through flora, like the attached.
