From the SGV Tribune:
Bike trail to get new entry
IRWINDALE - A new entryway to the Santa Fe Dam's bike trail will be constructed thanks to a $50,000 grant approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.
The project will include a decorative gate, a rest area, a drinking fountain and seating. The funding will also pay for directional signs and signs informing people about native plants and insects they might see along the trail, said Gary Boze, a spokesman for the county Public Works Department.
The grant came from the Water Conservation Authority, a Joint Powers Authority between the Los Angeles County Flood Control District and the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy.

Is the construction project at base of the dam?

Sounds great! The next time I have a day off and my wife doesn't, I plan on taking that bike path to her work in Santa Fe Springs! Any projected completion date? (not that it means much)
I am not sure how this will improve my experience riding there. When I am riding I am not usually looking for plants and insects. Though on occasion a native insect and I have met. If they are not native I would not know it and probably can not speak their language anyway.

From what I understand and talking to one of the workers there, they are working on putting a pipe in that area. That's what the current construction project is.
Looking at the news of the entryway, I'm not quite sure where that's going to be - there's a chance it might be where the current construction is, but given that the grant just got approved this week, odds are the current construction is not for the new entryway.
But I'm excited!! Now if they'll just hurry up and fix that damn part of Rio Hondo just south of Santa Anita/El Monte airport and open it again, I'll be a happy camper.
