I went to the dentist today. It was my first visit in a LONG time. I mean LOOOONG. I haven't been since I was about 9-11 years old.

Soo....it turns out my teeth are very healthy! One small fissure in my number 1 tooth that he is going to take care of very quickly next week and then he just suggested coming in and getting my teeth cleaned once a year!

I even have enough room for my wisdom teeth!

Thanks Mom! :)

Congrats!!

Oh geez, here come the "genes" and "jeans" threads again! :p

Maybe we need a genes/jeans/geens subforum instead of a fart subforum. (?)

I do, and I'm sure that my vigilant toothbrushing has something to do with it, but my mom also has very healthy teeth. The dentist said that some people are just more prone to tooth decay than others. :)

Thanks Siu!

Gee, I'm sure dear old forgotten Dad had nothing to do with your good genes.....

It's like you always see an athlete saying "Hi Mom!" to the camera. Dads get nuthin'. :(

Good job Shadiyah! My dentist told me the same thing after like 12 years between visits. He was rubbing his hands and salivating at the thought of all the costly dental work I was bound to need and was amazed that all I needed was a filling for a cavity that was too small to fill 12 years earlier. I thank fluoridated water.

Ok...thanks Dad! :)

I'm not really sure if he gave me the good teeth genes, though. ;)

I can thank them both for my green eyes! Both have the recessive gene, but I was the only kid enough the family lucky enough to get them!

Awesome! I'm sure the fluoride probably helped me as well.

Fissure? That translates to crack in my head. Wait, that didn't come out right. There's no crack in my head, chemical or physical. But the word... I mean... Uhm...

I'm not familiar with dental terms...that's what he called it. He said it would take three minutes to fill in. :)

I've got bad teeth from minimally 2 grandparents. But since Siu taught me to brush 5 times a day, no more cavities. I've had like 12 though, so much dental work awaits me in the future.

That is great! I never kept up with my teeth until i got older. After my first visit to the dentist to get some fillings i would brush my teeth well. Then i haven't been to the dentist in about 6 years and when i finally went i just needed one of my fillings redone and that was it:D

Aren't you in your mid twenties? And you haven't been to a dentist since you were 11 or 12 years old? That's a long time to go without seeing a dentist.

It means you have a hole in your tooth that is natural, not caused by decay, just that your enamel formed funny on that tooth. Had one for thirty years before Pop got around to filling it in.

Oh, and get your teeth cleaned biannually not annually. Makes the cleanings easier, less buildup, better for your gums, and any potential problems can be noticed twice as quickly.

Well, if you know you take good care of your teeth, they look healthy and you have no pain or other issues, why would you see a dentist?

Wow, count your blessings:)

I have always taken care of my teeth.
Never had a big problem with cavities.
But as I have gotten older, I have found that my teeth are brittle, I have broken a couple, and the enamel is about gone. With all the root canals and caps, I am certain that i have paid for a couple of my dentists' vacations.

I mentioned this to my mother, and she said: "Oh, sounds like you got my teeth"

Thanks, Mom:(

And entirely commendable - if you can pull it off. :D

It is a long time, I agree! In fact, that is one of the reasons why I have been so apprehensive about seeing one. I was afraid of what they'd tell me. I was also terrified of dentists for some reason, probably because of my last visit when I was very young? I dunno. But hey, I'm not scared anymore, I have great teeth (I'm also really lucky in that they came in straight w/out braces) and no cavities! :)

I do kind of wonder why my parents never took me when I was a teenager. That is kind of weird. But then again, we were very poor at that time and I can see how the cost would have put a strain on my mom. (Another reason why I haven't been - afraid of the cost). I suppose she made up for it by passing on her healthy teeth to me! :)

Thanks for the clarification, Allen. Is your dad a dentist?

I think I will go in twice a year now. :)

Pop has been both in private practice and a professor at Emory and MCG for over fifty years.
He only goes into his office a few days a week now. He's one of those kind of people that if he's conscious he has got to be doing something. Gonna die on his feet and take three more steps before he hits the ground.

I had 2 cavities when I was 18. That probably would have been it except for that **$%ing prednisone I had to take when I had the ear tumor. My ENT surgeon was completely ignorant of the fact that prednisone can cause tooth decay and gum recession. It would have been nice to be given a head's up. I would have taken it anyway as it did prevent permanent damage to my facial nerve. Had I known, I could have told my dentist and he would have seen me more frequently after the recovery. I was lucky that I got away with just one really odd (according to my dentist) cavity and gum recession that is reversing itself. Sonicare rocks! :D

It's a wonderful thing to have a dentist who teaches at the local dental school and who somewhat specializes in dentistry for the HIV+. He knows a great deal about drug interactions and side effects. He's the one who told me to go visit my opthamologist. Sure enough, the prednisone also worsened my myopia.
