I went to the track here in Hendersonville NC today. Those jumps looked REALLY big. They gave me a beater and helmet, off I went. Halfway to the first turn I was in love. I'm so happy right now I can't believe it.

I jumped ramps in the backyard as a kid on a banana seater, but I always wanted to try the track. I'm 34 now, waited much too long. I'm so buying a cruiser tomorrow.

Great sport! Man that was a blast.

There is only one in the shops in the area, a Redline Proline. The folks at the track said it was a good one, so works for me. I'm coming from road, so 375 for a complete bike seems like the greatest deal ever ;-)

I wish I could go back to the track right now, just loved every second of it. I've got a big yard, and a shovel though.

Great for you GK! I just came back to BMX for the first time since 1985 this last year. I am racing 40 - 44 cruiser. I am going to the NBL national race in Norwalk Ohio this next weekend. You will love that Redline Proline cruiser. My friend has one. Great bike. Will you be racing NBL or ABA?

Great to hear it's a good bike from so many folks. I got to try out the Flite today for a lap, it was like a Cadillac after the little Diamond Back 20 I was mashing on. I guess the Proline is a step down, but can't imagine it would make any difference to an out of shape noob. NBL track here, so NBL it is.. I'm easy to please. There are some ABA tracks in the area, I gathered they are trying to have some mixed races with fee's waived so you don't have to double up... sounds nice.

Good luck at the Nationals! I'll be lucky to get out of bed tomorrow.. off to look for the icy-hot ;-)

The new "random gate" is kind of interesting. You can find examples on youtube. Are you going to go with clipless pedals? I have been using them for 3 weeks. I will never go back to flats. Have fun at practice. I am going to practice both Saturday and Sunday of this week.

That's the point of a random gate. You don't know when it's going to drop.

that's one of the things i was good at, i'll be out of wind by the first turn so i guess i'am gonna have to figure something out. so there are no lights at all?

I guess not. I've never had a random gate but I've heard about them. I race ABA so they don't have radom ones. They have a regular cadence with lights.

That's all that is important, and as long as you're having fun, it's worth it.

Here is how the recorded "random gate" message works in the NBL.

"OK riders... Let's set em up......... Riders ready?........ Watch the gate" (insert random delay between 0 - 2.5 seconds here) beep.beep.beep.beeeeeeeeep(gate slams down)

I raced with the random gate for the first time last weekend at the NBL nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. It worked pretty good. There were not a bunch of guys falling off the gate. Basically it prevents people from slingshotting the gate. That's all.

I convinced the wife to let me build various bumps and jumps around the yard, took two days for the first set. I'm lucky to have good soil and a lot of clay by the creek. I worked so hard I was too tired to go to the practice yesterday. Doh.

Is it normal to have a track open only one day a week, only in the afternoon, and one day for races?

Many tracks don't mind if you practice while they are not open. Check to make sure. You should post some pics of your backyard practice area. I am bribing the earth mover construction guys who keep their heavy equipment behind my neighborhood. With my best Spanish language skills and $50 cash I am getting a set of double jumps and a rhythm section built. :D

Well i'am exhausted! I went to gate practice last night .That's the most fun i've had in a while. I actually had a couple people ask me where i was from, i said around here, they said never seen you before, i said cause it's been a while.I'am no Cru Jones , but i did smoke some of the little kid's (joking)and they where really fast.I'am feeling it today my leg's are on fire, i can barely walk. First chance i get i'am doing it again.I really wish i had started this in the spring, but better late then never.

A kid came up to me last week and said "Wow, you're really sweating a lot!" I'm really out of shape, I can already tell a difference just from the last week though.

The track here is gated and locked up all week. I don't really want to dig up the yard, but 3 hours of track time a week is not enough. I'll get some pics in the next few days, if I don't break my neck first.

You can also call your local bike shop that caters to BMX riders. Their staff will be able to tell you of areas near your home where "unofficial" practice features can be found. People make jumps, rollers, rhythm sections, etc with shovels and whlelbarrows all the time.
